Is mine the only baby to cry on waking up?

I sat in a cafe today near a mother with a baby about the same age as mine (5 months-ish), and watched as the baby peacefully woke from her sleep and gazed around until, 5 mins later, her mother picked up her. Is this normal??!! I had assumed all babies, like mine, cried when they woke up and demanded immediate attention. Now it is slowly dawning on me that maybe my DD is what they call a 'difficult', highly strung baby. Does anyone else have a baby who cries on waking, nearly every time?

I would say 50% of the time DD would wake up and cry, DS was the same.
They are both pretty mellow in every other respect though so don't worry.

well........my ds always cried before he even opened his eyes after a sleep but he was a very happy baby apart from this.
dd spent first 2 or 3 years of her life in a strop so hard to say with her.
easy babies grrrrrrr

DS2 is 5.5 months and always wakes up with a loud shout! My 1st son did too and even now wakes up a real grump from his lunch nap, he will sit scowling for a good 20 minutes before smiling and chatting again.

But they both wake up happy in the morning which is nice

Mine cried most of the time on waking. But he was generally happy at other times and still is. Now he babbles when he wakes sometimes but still cries a fair bit. I don't think the 'waking peacefully and calmly gazing around' is typical!

Mine cries intermittently for about half an hour before actually waking. Sometimes he drops back into deep sleep instead. It's a real chinese water torture!

you are far from alone on this - my baby girl cries when waking at least 90% of the time, and wails and groans herself off to the land of nod as well.
little blessings aren't they ?
it makes it worse when you see 'easy babies' - all the babies i'm surrounded by drift off serenely, awake peaceful and survey their surroundings and drift off to sleep being rocked in mummy's arms.
mine in comparison screams, tugs my hair, crawls over my head (or tries to) and insists on being walked off to sleep, regardless of where we are. she did it on the train the other day, and i nearly turned the air so blue we could've swum home.
i think it's sometimes overtiredness - the longer she sleeps the quicker she is to snap out of it i've noticed - she is also 5 months and cannot self soothe so usually naps in 40 minute cycles. if you can encourage yours to sleep longer spells it should make a difference.

My DS (23 months) cries 90% of the time on waking from a nap or a night sleep. I often wondered if I was alone in this. He has only woke without crying when I've been right next to him and he can see me immediately or he's on top of me sleeping... most of the time, though, he cries/shouts/whinges before even opening his eyes. Has done this since day 1.
