DS 6yr old - defiant & doesn't care!

I am so concerned & unhappy.
DS is 6 & his behaviour is becoming increasingly bad to the point where the grandparents are commenting on how defiant he is Blush
We've had a number of days out this summer hols & it has been hard work from the minute he wakes up. Asking him to get dressed or put his shoes on ends in him losing his rag. I ask him nicely, I then tell him we need to hurry because we have to go, meanwhile he is telling me I should do it for him! I then give him to the count of 3 or he will be on the step for 5mins. I get to 3 tell him to go on the step & then he's begging & pleading for forgiveness. When I say no, I've given plenty of warnings he then becomes aggressive & quite honestly nasty Sad I end up manhandling him Blush to the step & closing the lounge door, he will then start throwing shoes at the door!!
Eventually he calms down & I talk to him about how none of that needed to happen & I say lets forget about it & have a nice day. But by the time we've arrived at our destination he's already managed to upset his younger brother (age 4) on the journey & I'm filled with dread.
The day then seems to be dictated by his behaviour with regular tantrums & aggressive behaviour, he will storm off if we say 'no' to anything, got himself lost once by doing this but when we found him he wasn't upset just embarassed & cross.
When we get home & its bath, stories & bed he will then refuse to stay in his room, I say 'get into bed please' & its a smirk & a 'no' from him, this goes on until I threaten him with losing his stories for the next night, again he'll push this until he loses them & then we repeat the begging for forgiveness & then the aggression again - It is draining & hardwork Sad.
He has no fear, doesn't care if he causes a scene (yes, I do) & doesn't seem to care about anyone else.

One-to-one he is a different little boy, caring, considerate, helpful & it breaks my heart that no one else sees this. He is a clever boy, in the top sets in his class although he has struggled with friendships at school & is unbelievably competitive, tried to explain to him that there is no I in Team Smile
I would love to know that we're not the only ones going through this or if someone has any advice on how to manage his behaviour we would be so grateful.
Thanks in advance.

Ahhh your all so lucky to have schools that went back today, our's in next Wed...(darned inset days) we had amusing meltdown this afternoon playing snakes n ladders in the garden (birthday prezzie for dd1 last nov!) upon sliding down her 1st snake, dd1 went into major meltdown, despite dd2 and I still being way behind her, thus we smiled and carried on playing, whilst she ran into the house, threw herself all over the place, came out, removed her counter, stropped all over the garden, put her counter back on 100 and so on it went Hmm dd2 and I finished our game and went and made tea, whilst dd1 carried on throwing herself about in a 'look at me style' until she finally realised she was being silly and calmed down enough to talk to us! don't ya just love phases Grin

OMG I am so glad it's not just us! Mine is 7 and a half and I am convinced he is possessed. He is just bloody awful most of the time and seems to take an unholy glee in winding us all up. My poor older DS has been pushed to the limits of tolerance and beyond this summer.

I do feel totally helpless sometimes, my older DS was challenging but will always back down when faced with rage or a consequence - not so for my 7 year old - he manages to twist everything so it turns out to be someone else's fault. I really am considering issuing everyone with crucifixes!

Moosmummie · 02/09/2010 23:13

and don't get me STARTED on the whinging!

CharlieBoo · 03/09/2010 09:52

Hehehehehe Frizbe that is funny! I used to be like with board games and that did tickle me!

We've had a good last couple of days....I have tried to be a bit more tolerant and ignored some of the comments I know he is saying to get a reaction and he realises its getting him no-where!! Back to school monday!

If any of you are still on here, how are things 7 years on? I'm dealing with an almost 7 year old who whinges, strops, is defiant continually. Tell me what worked and that it gets better? :)

Fluffywhitepompoms · 18/08/2017 10:19

I'd love to know too! Defiant 5.5 year old in this house and half way through the summer holidays...aargh!!

Omg I can soo relate to this. Please tell us it gets easier?

3littlerabbits · 18/08/2017 17:24

Do you think the lack of replies means it gets worse? Shock

Or it's all going so well they don't need mumsnet anymore? Hopefully it's this one :)

Oh look, this thread has been revived Smile. (I found it through "search").

My 7.5 year old has, frankly, been a little bastard over the last few weeks. He's been going off at least 2-3 times a day over the last few weeks. Seemingly anything can set him off- any little setback or refusal, then he will absolutely refuse to listen to me, scream, strop, speak rudely, bang doors, kick things over....Angry. I end up sending him to his room, then he won't stay in it, then I'll tell him to get back in, then he will scream and strop all over again....

I'm trying "How to talk so kids will listen..." , even though I find it as irritating as most American self help books. It has some nuggets of truth about empathising with their feelings, but is by no means the quick fix they will have you believe.

Hi just found this too and going through the same thing. Would absolutely love to know how they all turned out?..! Please do respond if still on mumsnet.

would be great to hear of them all growing up and following their dreams with their badass willpower !

3littlerabbits · 18/01/2026 10:48

Haha! Cant believe this thread is back! I am still here and happy to report that my then 7 year old is now a wonderful kind and determined 15year old who cooked us dinner yesterday and I can hear right now laughing with siblings at ridiculous YouTube funny videos. There is hope! I remember those days though (barely). How I’d love to go back for a day and spend it with that stroppy 7 year old

Sunshinebound99 · 19/01/2026 22:49

Omg so wonderful to hear!! How cool is this we get to hear the future! So pleased to hear things going well and he’s so good these days. We are in the pits with ours atm. Super cute and super difficult!! X
