Grunting Newborn, only at night!

Doodleydoo · 28/08/2010 17:18

Just wondered as I know that grunting in newborns is fairly normal - finding their voice, noises etc (although I could be wrong!), but my 2 week old ds only makes these gruting noises when he is frustrated about latching on at night, and also only does this grunting in the evening from about 7pm until morning.........
Driving me slightly nuts as he is fussing quite a lot (and am feeling sleep deprived - also driving me nuts as it is only overnight!) but am worried as dh is back to work next week and unless he is permanently relegated to the spare room I am worried about his sleep and the fact that he does a 4 hour commute daily.

Does anyone know if a) grunting is normal (yes am sure it is but want to check!)
b) how I can get the grunting to stop, be a bit quieter.

I am well aware that newborns are very noisy when they are sleeping but this is beyond the noise the dd made Smile

Tips welcomed!

only to say that they do get noisy sometimes and my friend just had a baby who was incredibly loud at night, so much so her DH moved into another room. Not any help, but just to reassure you you're not alone.

Are his nostrils flaring or chest recessing? Does he look slightly blueish around the lips? If it is 'no' to all of these I would say it is just normal newborn noises. If 'yes' I would be concerned your ds could have a heart complaint of some sort and I'd go to GP asap.
Don't think you can stop it though if it is just normal newborn noise sorry!

Totally normal. all of mine have done this and my youngest who is ten months still does this, she also growls! they all did it when tired as if to say "leave me alone". its their way of communicating, i wouldnt worry about it, if he is happy and his usual self the rest of the time then he sounds fine to me. :)

CatIsSleepy · 28/08/2010 17:53

dd1 and 2 were both very grunty and snuffly for the first few weeks, i had to get ear-plugs to get any sleep at all

Doodleydoo · 28/08/2010 17:57

Have to say am not unduly concerned health wise - i.e not worried that not normal newborn noises iyswim! No back arching, not colic or excessive wind (that causes him to cry) he just sounds like a grunty piglet, moaning minnie and yes growls like a bear or a cub of some sort. (Was going to say he sounds like a bad porno most of the time but I wouldn't know about that sort of thing Blush)

Will perhaps suggest to dh that he spends some of the week in the spare room so that he gets some rest as the more rested he is the more support I will get. Dh doesn't function on no sleep and we also have a toddler so I need that support - besides I can try and catch up during nap times (wishful thinking!)

yes get the waxy ones from Boots (Bio Ears I think they're called, they're actually for swimming I think) and shove 'em in good and deep Grin
bliss!

Doodleydoo - my son was grunting / snuffling as a newborn. We were in hospital for an extended period of time post-birth due to complications (for me), but the grunting / snuffling (no other symptoms) worried the doctors enough to run a couple of tests, which picked up something which needed antibiotics and a slightly longer stay in hospital. Don't want to worry you unduly, but I think it's worth checking out with your GP - hope it's nothing and that you all manage to get some sleep!

My DS made loads of noise when he was a newborn. We were living in a 1 bed flat so we had to put his moses basket in the front room at night after 2 weeks as every little noise woke me up instantly.

Doodleydoo · 28/08/2010 18:50

OK will check with GP - just wondered as it is only at night, does sound more like groaning and a bear cub but will get it checked out!

We called our DD "the hoglet" when she was born Grin

My DS was particularly grunty at night as a newborn, thats why he ended up in his room with the monitor on as low as possible at three weeks old!!!

My health visitor told me this was very common. She said young babies often sound like horses whinneying (sp?). But I think a baby pig is also rather fitting!
