5mo choking on saliva

My 5mo keeps choking on own saliva - is this normal. Sometimes it gets so bad she stops breathing until I pick her up and pat her back - its so scary. Should I take her to the gp or will they just think I am a neurotic mother!?

Mine does this too, I think it's just because she drools so much at the moment, sometimes some of it goes down the wrong way. But there's a difference between gagging and choking; I don't think it would be possible to actually choke on saliva (although I could be wrong). Do you see a health visitor? You could ask them next time.

Is this associated with a cough or has the baby had a cough that has gone on along time previous to this saliva choking? A long shot maybe but when my baby had whooping cough, he regularly choked on his own saliva for quite awhile afterwards. Even when inoculated a child can develop whooping cough and an older baby may not present as severely as a very young babe so the cough could be overlooked. That said, if it is associated with whooping cough there isnt much that can be done and it will stop. But if all this doesnt sound anywhere near to what your child is suffering then a trip to the GP is in order.

Did you take the baby to your gp or a specialist? My (now 3 1/2 month old) has been doing the same choking/turning red looks like not breathing/choking on a hairball since 2wks. Scares me to death so he sleeps upright in his glider next to my bed so I can grab him quickly and pat him. Its like someone is pouring a drink down your throat when you are sleeping and you can't breath and swallow at the same time. At 6wks we thought reflux and had an ent scope him- but that's not it-no irritation-we were sent home. It continues to happen and I feel like a nutcase bc I see it all the time and hubby hardly ever does (sleeps like a log). Any luck?

I think you should take your baby to the GP - could have enormous tonsills blocking the throat.
