Is my child the only one who can't scoot?

DS1 is nearly 3yrs old but still needs to be helped ie towed everywhere which is killing my back! Especially when pushing DS2 in buggy at same time..

Does anyone know if you can buy/make an extension handle for a Mini Micro scooter?

If he can't pedal or push himself along with his feet I'd make him leave it at home and walk until he has learnt - far too much hassle for you especially with the little one in the buggy! Is there somewhere nearby i.e garden, quite path, park etc where he can learn then you can all go on yor trips together without you breaking your back trying to do everything at once.

Most of the children I know only really got the hang of scooting at 3 yrs. My dd got hers for her third birthday so was fine fairly quickly, my ds was handed one down to him at 2.5 yrs though and has only really got to grips with it in the last couple of months, he turned 3 last month, and he still gets lazy tired and asks me to pull him after a while or if going up hill. I haven't tried it myself but have read posters on here before saying they just tie some ribbon to the handle bar and pull with that?

Will watch thread with interest though for other ideas as currently 31 wks pregnant and my back is killing me!

No he's not alone, ds1 struggled with his micro scooter until he was well over four and half. If you can afford it John Lewis sell a scooter with two wheels at the front and one at the back which is much much easier.

Can your son jump and/or hop?

Sorry I thought you meant like a tricycle with wheels and pedals (Don't know why must have baby brain in today!) So was a bit [shocked] when you said he couldn't do it as DS1 and all his friend have been riding their's since about 2. Don't know about scooters DS1 now 3years and 4months can scoot quite well on his cousins but goes far too fast and will not be careful so we have never got him one.

ValiumSingleton - does lots of jumping and just starting to try hopping. Is that important??

This is copied from the thread that mentioned the ribbon on handlebars, would have thought it could be a bit dangerous downhill though!

have just read thread quickly but i don't think anyone has mentioned the SCOOTER option.

DD1 was just 3 when dd2 was born and i was determined not to get a double buggy. We got her used to no buggy from about 2.6 and I got a buggy board.

I hated the buggy board and only used it twice, and found that, with dd on her scooter, we could get anywhere reasonably quickly. If she's tired, I can push the pushchair and pull her scooter. She has a mini micro scooter, and we've got a ribbon on the handlebars, for pulling. Everybody I know has the same, but it might be a bit of a London thing.

Obviously 2.6 is a bit younger, and it depends if he is a stayer or a runner. You can't use a scooter if you feel that he might make a break for it or scoot into the road.

Anyway, might be worth considering.

I do the ribbon on the handlebars thing, but I use the thingumy that is supposed to hold a buggy-board up - like a nylon strap with a loop at one end. DS is a mad-keen scooter but has no sense of his limits, and often gets towed home. It seems safe to me.

mintyfresh · 26/08/2010 20:11

My DD is 3 and can't scoot - I was beginning to think she was the ONLY one as I see 2 yr olds and even younger kids racing along on their 'micro scooters'!

If not jumping/hopping might indicate some problem with joints or muscles (like my DD has).

SilveryMoon · 26/08/2010 20:18

My ds1 got a scooter for his 3rd birthday.
Is the micro-mini the one with 2 wheels at the front?
His has 2 wheels at the back and he is a bit unsure on it, so for now I am having him practise round the house and we take it to the park.
His folds up really small so I can hang it on the pushchair handle bars when he gets fed-up.

OP I did see one with 4 wheels that can be adjusted to grow with their abilities so might be useful.
Do you want a link?

hefferlump · 26/08/2010 20:39

DS got a 'my first scooter' from amazon for his 2nd Birthday. Two wheels front and back and can be reduced to two front/one back and finally one front and back. Its brill and he loves it.

Currently selling for £16 on Amazon.

Holbol · 26/08/2010 21:50

I'm liking the ribbon idea! What happens if you stop suddenly though?

DS1's scooter is the sort with 2 wheels at front and 1 at back - should be v easy to steer if he applies himself at all
