Thinking of buying Jolly Phonics for dd who is astarting to take an intrest in letters.

I started a thread yesterday where I tried to get grips with the phonics concept with not much success.

So thought I might learn through the DVD with dd.

Is it a good dvd that teaches phonoics correctly?

not sure about jolly phonics but DS enjoyed the CBeebies Phonics packs and he also likes to look at Alphablocks on the Cbeebies website (it's free and keeps the quiet) Grin they are both good in that they demonstrate the sound made in a clear visual way, and also show how to blend the phonics into short words.

Mine liked the DVD - I hated it.

I think how much help it is depnds on whether the school uses jolly phonics or whether it uses another system. I think if it uses jolly phonics, the DVD (although dire) would be helpful. If thw school uses another phonics system, I think it would confuse.

My son loved the Jolly phonics Cd. Have never tried DVD.

I did start to go slowly mad listening to it in long car journeys but it always calmed him down at least.

It came in a pack with all the song words and actions that will certainly help you to get to grips with phonics. Easy for a 3-4 year old to understand and simple for a grown up too!

My son (about to start reception)can now pretty much sound out simple words and can say letters phonetically and as we say them when singing the alphabet.

I haven't got so far as checking what phonics system his school will be teaching by the way!

I've been led by him and I'm happy that he shows a vague interest in sounds and letters when the mood takes him. Hope it won't confuse him, but I'm sure it won't.

Think the best thing we've done is to read to him a lot. When out and about too - 'sign says ZOO, STOP, GO, OPEN' etc.

Thats the sort of thing I was thinking of WowOoo.

I don't want to confuse dd but I am coming round to thinking that learning something about letters and their sounds is better than learning nothing, even if she learns it in a different way to what her school teaches.

Oh why is it so confusing!
