My 6 week old screams the place down whilst I'm driving but only when I stop. Tried giving her a dummy but she didn't want it. Any tips to help her?

My DC were similar - they just prefer the movement of the car - I would often drive way out of the way to avoid stopping so that they would doze off

Don't worry, she will get used to it...my dd was the same but it doesn't last forever!

Ughh - what a horrible situation - but it does pass. My ds didn't have that problem in the car, but if I had him in his pram he was only content if it was rolling over bumpy ground - something with a bit of texture - the more the better. If I took him into a shop (very smooth floors) he started screaming the place down.

DD used to do this. She didn't stop until she was big enough to go into a forward facing car seat at 10 months. Until then we just drove very oddly indeed, taking longcuts everywhere and slowing down way before the lights so we could keep the car moving. And some music to drown out the screaming...

We used to time long drives for when she would sleep, either at lunchtime or evening, otherwise it was just too stressful.

She will grow out of it, just might take some time.

They do grow out of it, we just tried not to stop by crawling up to red lights praying they turned green before we got there!

itsatiggerday · 23/08/2010 15:55

Oh, yes, I remember that phase. Stopped about 3/4 months iirc, in fact I think when she was a bit bigger/stronger in the car seat and didn't need the movement to soothe her tummy or something but could hold herself in less of a slump. I used to go to ridiculous lengths to keep the car in motion....

meandjoe · 23/08/2010 16:33

Ohhhhh I remember this phase soooo well! what a nightmare! We just went round the long way and missed out any red traffic lights til he was about 3 months when ds discovered he hated the car seat full stop and screamed and wailed whether the car was moving or not! Don't worry he did grow out of that too! Just a phase... one of many that will each drive u mad but they do end eventually x

teenyanne · 23/08/2010 18:44

Mine did that - I found sometimes the radio helped, especially radio 4 as she like voices. That, and we used to drive really slowly up to red lights in the hope that she wouldn't notice we stopped or the light would go green before we got there.

Now she's 10 mo and an absolute treat in the car - it will pass..

kneehightoagrasshopper · 23/08/2010 18:54

Loud music. Does nothing to help the baby, but a lot to help your nerves Grin

dd screamed whenever she was in the car for the first 4-5 MONTHS of her life.

pigleychez · 23/08/2010 19:28

My 12 week old does this and I remember it well from DD1 too.

Its the motion in the car they like and dont like it stopping. As others have said its just a phase and will pass.

My 2yr old has picked up on it and says," oh no mummy, dont stop!" when I stop at lights and DD2 cries Grin

tek78 · 24/08/2010 17:47

Oh thank God! I'll just get some ear plugs maybe as I can't stop driving...

We had this. It was hideous. Second the radio 4 tip, and we also used to wind the windows down sometimes, although I don't remember if that helped. I remember a 3 mile journey with DS1 once reduced me to a gibbering wreck, it should only haev taken 5 mins but it took aaaaaages with stopping to check he was alright every 30 seconds. Happy days!

bintofbohemia · 24/08/2010 17:54

Does your dd also go ape if your speed drops below 20mph? I felt like Sandra Bullock in Speed for the first few months. Didn't look quite as good, mind.

hurray for this thread! I've got an 8 week old & was about to ask the same thing myself. Nevermind baby on board sticker- I need a sign on my car that just says OMG I'm So Sorry!
