Can I, or should I teach daughter to read?

She seems very keen, keeps asking that she wants to read, recognises some words and seems to want to get involved in more than being read to.

So far I've just read to her, pointed to words, drawn her name and kept it just as part of any other play or reading.

I'm conscious about doing it the wrong way, or slipping into hothousing, pushing too much too soon (she's 22 months).

But she keeps asking, has been conversational since 18 months, knows 1-20, every colour, etc and I just feel she's asking regularly and is really intrigued

(BTW, this isn't a G&T by stealth, I really want to know from experienced mothers/pedagogues if I shouldn't actually get phonics cards this young)

If she's recognising words then I wouldn't bother with phonics, but might just get flashcards so she can expand number of words she recognises, and keep it light in general.

It isn't hothousing if the child is asking IMO. I could read at 2 - according to my Mum I used to point to words and ask what they were and once she'd told me I had learned them. Children find ways of learning to read with or without your help, if they are interested!
