Baby sleeping too much?

Hi, first time poster on this forum, and possibly my "problem" will sound like heaven and I shouldn't be concerned, but here goes...

DS is 9 weeks old, and in the last couple of days has started sleeping for very long stretches at a time. He is sleeping through the night for 7/8 hours, which of course is the nirvana we all want to reach! However, he has also started sleeping during the day for ages. Last night he slept from around 9pm til 5am. Had a long feed. Then was up for maybe 2-2.5 hours and then slept again for another hour. Another longish feed and some awake time, then asleep again. He's currently asleep and has been since 10.30ish (I'm typing this at 3.15). I have tried waking him gently, but he's not interested, just snuffles, fidgets and carries on snoozing. I don't think he's ill (no sign of fever/distress, is alert and smily when awake). Is this normal/just a growth spurt? My boobs feel like they're about to burst! Should I just wake him to feed him or let him be? Thanks in advance for any advice proffered.

I would wake him to feed him at least every 4 hours in day and let him sleep as long as he will at night.

there is no education to my comment, but.......
I wouldn't wake a sleeping baby
He'll be the first to let you know hunger nappy etc

Try sleep feeding if your full, or express for the inevitable return of the night time feed fest

While the sun shines.......

pran ma is right its not good to let babies go longer than 4 hrs without food at that age.I was told by Dr. express if you need to but otherwise sleeping in between is fine. Years ago if the baby didn't sleep most of the time between feeds it was not good!!!!!!!!!!!! hey ho.

hi. I too had a young baby who from 8 weeks slept for 12 hours through the night and still does. She would often go down bout 8pm and waken bout 8 or 9am. Only to fall asleep an hour later for bout 5 hours. She did this all day. Yes my boobs were killing me but now at 6 months old she is an absolute darling and so relaxed...and still sleeps a lot. And has never woken for a night feed.
As a midwife i did worry but as long as baby is alert when awake i would go with the flow and enjoy your baby xx
expressing is an option but your body will quickly get used to only making the amount of milk your baby requires which will make you more comfortable..honest lol Grin

Why is it not good to let babies go longer than four hours between feeds? IME if a baby is in a deep sleep it is nigh on impossible to rouse them to the point of breast feeding... Surely a healthy baby will take what they need from the breast when feeding and so if it has been for five or six hours since last feed will take more?

Thank you so much for all your replies, informative and comforting! The little fella woke up shortly after I posted, had a huge feed, gave his baby gym a good kicking, then promptly fell asleep again from 5 until around 8pm. Followed by another big feed and more contented playing/gurgling and another feed at 10.30, then off to bed about 45 minutes ago. So a bit more of a "normal" pattern this evening, I think.

I have to say I've always believed in the old adage of not waking a sleeping baby, but on the other hand I just feel a little worried about his going for long stretches of time not eating at this age. But since he does not seem to be in any distress/discomfort, I think I will let him lead me and count myself lucky to have these breaks and a happy baby.

Thanks again!
