9 month old hates having nappy changed

my 9 month DD now hates having her nappy changed, especially hates lying on her back - she immediately twists over on to her front and starts to crawl off the mat. when we lie her down again to finish nappy, she HATES it and starts crying. we're now putting her nappy standing upright as much as possible, though a bit tricky. any tips from anyone welcome on how to deal with this- is this normal ? if so, i guess we just have to get used to upright nappy changes!

Have you tried distraction? Give her a toy or something to hold her attention, and change the nappy super fast! It is normal sadly. Upright nappy changing is quite a challenge!

Horrible phase. The only thing that worked for a while was a 'forbidden toy', something like an old remote control, set of keys so they think they are winning Grin.

No advice I'm afraid, but will be watching with interest as DS (also 9 months) sounds very similar. He'd rather be crawling, cruising or infact doing anything other than having his nappy changed. We've also resorted to changing him whilst he's standing, with varying degrees of success. It's especially tricky when he decides to plonk himself down again before we've managed to get in with the wipes! Hard work isn't it?

SirBoobAlot · 19/08/2010 22:34

Oh we get full on screaming here! Its a nightmare.

I have a toy nearby to hand him immediately and kind of make the laying him down a bit of play time - helps sometimes.

i just had to wrestle dd1 from this age onwards... got better when she was in pull ups. dd2 completely different, loves a clean nappy and brings them to us.

Honeydragon · 19/08/2010 22:36

I prefasten dd's bum genius and when they are on special boy pull ups size 4 or active fit size 4 and prefasten them Grin. Then I get he on the frontal escape on leg at a time stand and pull. Just like trousers.

Or I too go with the forbidden toy Grin

I still haven't found a soloution to stop her trying to leg it asap to the nearest white carpet / item of clothing with a poo covered bum though Hmm

Honeydragon · 19/08/2010 22:37

(dd is just about 9 months btw - and did the same for my ds in pull ups asap)

simpson · 19/08/2010 22:39

My DD now 2.6 went through this phase at around 10mths or so and the only thing that worked is what someone else on this thread has mentioned with the forebidden object to distract.

I found my mobile phone worked well Grin

TonariNoTotoro · 19/08/2010 22:39

I'm afraid my method of dealing with this was just to pin down and get the nappy change done as quickly as possible. Sometimes I had to pin him down with my feet (gently of course!). He hated it but it was the fastest, most painless way of getting it done.

Species8472 · 20/08/2010 11:07

God, I do sympathise. My 13m DD is currently an absolute nightmare to pin down to change nappy, put on sleeping bag, dress, undress, dry after the bath - it's a friggin' nightmare. I end up chasing her round the room, or, like, TonariNoTotoro pinning her down, it's awful. Have no ideas really! Have tried all toys. Books work sometimes. Actually, I should just give her my phone, that's her favourite toy Hmm. That, or a remote control.

hazhawken · 20/08/2010 22:18

thanks for your tips - i have been giving her a toy, but the mobile phone or remote is a very good idea ! looks like we've just got to put up with it for a while ! i too try to keep her down to get nappy on, but wondering if my standing-up-nappy-putting-on skills are about to be honed finely (though more difficult with popin reusable nappies...)at least i'm not the only one with a wriggly baby !

This is really frustrating me too. My DS is 8 months old and has been doing this for over two months. I can flip him back over 50 times just for a wet nappy. I wish he could stand up properly so I could try putting the nappy on that way.

We have one special toy with music and lights that is exclusively brought out for nappies. I bought it 2 weeks ago and it's helping a lot.

Every day I set up in advance by opening a days worth of nappy sacks and nappies so no time is wasted from the time I set him on the mat. If there is a poo, I get a bunch of wipes out before even taking him into the room. Helps a tiny bit to be prepared.

I'm going to charge up my old mobile phone -- what a great idea!

How long until they grow out of this???

Use pull ups - I found that it was easier to get my daughter to stand holding onto the cot at 9 months than to lie down. It means that they only have to lie for previous removal and clean. You can get pull ups from a size 4 (in larger stores) - my daughter wasn't a particularly big 9 month old but they were OK.

At 16 months it isn't a problem any more.
