Moaning & Groaning in Sleep - 10 weeks old

Hi All

2nd post today - really picking your brains.

New mum...DD 10 weeks old. Good bedtime routine, Bath 9pm, bottle, sleep by 10 in cot in our room. Generally wakes at 3am for bottle & goes straight back to bed then up again at 6am & then is generally up.

Getting to the point....she moans, groans & stretches (very loudly) all night & it is driving me & DH mad as we think she is awake when she is not....not to mention our lack of sleep!

Does/has anyone elses baby been really loud as everyone looks at me funny when I tell them & I'm now beginning to worry there maybe something wrong. She doesnt moan during the day & I cant say it's since she transferred from moses basket to cot as she was the same in the moses basket...just not as loud.

I think she is too young to go in her own room.
She seems happy enough......just loud!

Oh yes, DD has been like this since she was born (now 12 weeks). Really normal I think, quite annoying though when you're desperately trying to sleep before they wake up!!

Flossbert · 18/08/2010 19:54

Totally normal. About 50% of my ante-natal group had put their babies in their own rooms by 10 weeks; the rest of us either just put up with it or were lucky enough not to have a noisy little blighter!

AMumInScotland · 18/08/2010 20:20

Yep, DS was the noisiest little creature imaginable overnight, groaning and scuffling about and farting Grin He went into his own room after about 2 months and we got a lot more sleep. But that was before the cot death advice started talking about 6 months or we probably would have stuck it out.

happygilmore · 18/08/2010 20:26

YY the farting!! All night long!

FoxyRevenger · 18/08/2010 20:46

Yes, she is unbelievably loud, she stretches in her sleep constantly and makes mad peeping sounds. Is very very funny but the sooner we can get her into her own room the better!!

Gurraun · 18/08/2010 21:27

My ds was incredibly loud - eventually sleep deprivation meant I moved him to his own room at 11 weeks and we've all slept very well ever since! (now 6 months)

brettgirl2 · 22/08/2010 18:56

I must admit to being quite confused about how them being in your room prevents cot death. Surely if they stopped breathing while you were asleep then you aren't going to wake up?

DD went into her own room at about 8 weeks. It was a really hot spell last year and cooler for her in the big cot (which was too big to have in our room).

lukewarmcupoftea · 22/08/2010 20:11

Oh yes, both mine were moaners and grunters. I'm a ridiculously light sleeper (have to wear earplugs every night just to sleep in the same room as dh even), so both DDs were in their own room within 2 or 3 weeks I think. It was that or I would seriously have gone mental through lack of sleep, I kid you not!

Downmum · 23/08/2010 01:10

Glad I stumbled across this as my DD has been doing exactly d same, the only difference is she does it during the day too. Storm it's quite scarry that your and my DD have the same identicle routine although my DD is now 12wks old and I'm a new mum too! Maybe were just too scarred to put out babies in another room, I know I am. Thinking of putting her cot in my room too.

lukewarmcupoftea · 23/08/2010 10:00

Brett, I think it's something to do with your breathing helps regulate theirs somehow Confused

It's all swings and roundabouts I reckon - I breastfed which has a huge statistical impact on reducing SIDS, but they slept in their own room, which has a smaller chance of increasing the risk. Of course you can do everything you can to minimise the risk, but you need to balance that against other risks, eg seriously sleep deprived mothers being a danger to their babies and everyone around them! Like everything else, you just get the facts then make an informed decision about what works for your family.

Btw, the grunting did stop after a few months. Dd1 is quiet as a mouse in bed now, dd2 still does a great line in random squeals and shrieks if anything dares disturb her. So it doesn't really mean anything wrt future sleep.

STORM01 · 24/08/2010 22:16

Thanks everyone...dont feel so bad now. Maybe another couple of weeks & if Im still sleep deprived she'll have to be a big girl & go in her own room!

DD went straight into her own room so we didn't notice the amount of noise she made until we stayed in a hotel room with her at about 8 weeks. She moaned and groaned all night - we nearly put her in the bathroom. Just to get some peace.
