dd is 3.1 and was an early talker and now literally nevre stops talking but she cannot say r or l, she says wabbit for rabbit and yeyyow for yellow.
will she just get it one day or should i be questioning the hv or someone? at present we just ignore and say the word correctly each time so she hears the letters.
she knows the difference between r and w on paper.

it'll come soon. My dd (v nearly 4) says 'lello' which is so cute!

Some sounds just take a bit longer to master.

thank you, dd starts nursery sept and my mom asked if i was going to mention her speech to the teacher and it got me wondering/worrying should i be doing more to help her?

my dd2 was exactly the same!
We encouraged her to curl her tongue and press it against the roof of her mouth when making the R sound.
It's amazing actually because we don't think much about the mechanics of our tongue when making sounds, we just make them!
We just played some games and reminded her in a funny way "Curl your tongue and push"...I bet you can't copy Mummy etc. We demonstrated "RRRRRRRR- Rabbit" etc and it worked really quickly!
I suppose you do the same with "YeLLow" but push your tongue on the back of your front teeth if you know what I mean!Wink
It might help x

thasnks pellmell, i told dd to push her tongue behind her teeth but she then stuck her tongue out Grin which was just funny so i left it. i dont want to make ehr self conscious about talking as she is quite sensitive.

My older dd got younger dd to practice y y y y, only for her to say yyyy lello.

Doubly cute!

Grin feel relieved that you havent all come on and said dd should be able to say all letters by now so at least i dont need to worry too much. Smile

My DS1 had speach therapy and the therapist said these can come at a much much later date.
DS2 is 3 1/2 and still not speaking, but trying.

mintyfresh · 15/08/2010 20:44

DD has had some speech therapy and we were given some info that those sounds are often much later to develop. Some kids start school unable to pronounce R and L so don't worry about your DD yet!

We've worked really hard with DD on her L sound because she couldn't lift her tongue up to lick her lips until recently (low muscle tone). We do lots of practice in the mirror which has really helped.

ds (5) is still only just coming out of the 'lellow' phase - and today Rochdale became first Watchdale and then Watchfield! Also an early talker, can say 'windargium leviosa' and 'unfortunately' perfectly - it just takes time!

tribpot · 15/08/2010 20:48

Eh, he can say it better than I can spell it. Wingardium

DD was referred to SALT when she was 3.4 for exactly this and was told it was entirely normal. She's nearly four now and still can't do it but her diction is improving so any day now. The important thing is whether or not it's making it hard for her to be understood or not.

NoahAndTheWhale · 15/08/2010 20:57

DD is 4.10 and can't say R properly all the time.

Although DH is 35.1 and he can't say R either. I am not too worried about DD.

familyfun · 17/08/2010 19:57

thanks all, i wont worry too much then, her speech is understandable so hopefully it will come with age/practice.
