What age did you stop reading aloud to your DCs?

DD is 6 and now able to read to herself. Every night she dives into bed with a paperback and declines our offers to read to her. While I'm really pleased that she enjoys reading so much, I wonder if I should be trying hard to persuade her to listen to me read a bit more. This is partly so that she can continue to learn pronunciation, expression and so on, but also because I miss that special time a bit (much as I grumble about it keeping me from my supper!)

What age did yours stop listening to you read and was it a passing phase?

My 11 year old (12 in December) still asks me to read to him and I still do at bedtime. I like the fact that he still asks but think it'll probably stop at the end of the holidays.

Hi DS is only 4 so not an issue yet, but my parents read to me till I was over ten and I learned to read when I was three. It meant that in addition to the things I could read for myself we could share longer and more emotionally complex stuff (like Lord of the Rings) Its a lovely thing to share, and indeed DH and I sometimes read to each other, or share reading a play. If you like it, keep offering.

Still haven't and my DC are 7, 11 and 13

Haven't yet and have no intention of stopping soon, children are 9, 7 and 4

I haven't read to my boys at night for about a year now... They are 9 and nearly 11.
I'll read them a story whenever they want and they ask during the weekend occasionally. Usually when I want to sit down with the paper Smile
I haven't missed it though.. They have so many clubs, sporting events, homework etc weeknights are a strain.

Hmmm, interesting, thanks.

I had no intention of stopping but she just isn't interested at the moment. I am hoping that it is just the initial thrill of being able to do it herself, and that this will wear off. I must ask my mum when she stopped with me, tbh I can't remember being read to once I was able to do it myself but I may be mistaken.

Maybe I need to tempt her with some Tolkien or something else that she will find fascinating but beyond her own ability!

My 10 year-old likes reading to me at bedtime. Has done since he's been about 6 or 7. Slight role-reversal but we enjoy it and I get to listen to him read at the same time :)

(Latest ... The Mr Gum series)

Stricnine · 08/08/2010 19:05

We've done to the role reversal thing too.. it's quite fun! We've also 'shared' stories where we can each do dialogue etc - really good fun!
I find now (13) bedtime is more of a chat session which is also good .. although I would prefer to go to bed earlier (!).

Pendulum · 08/08/2010 19:42

oh yes chil1234 we love mr gum too... I have special voices for all the characters and especially like doing my polly voice. Have you got the new one yet (no 7 I think)- I need to get my hands on it.
