One of my twins is 3 months adjusted age (she was 4 weeks early) has recently started smiling much more and becoming generally very sociable. However quite often she will be happily smiling away and then it will turn into a whingey kind of cry (not tears and not really crying but a whine sound). She also whines without smiling sometimes. is this normal? what does it mean? what can i do. also happens sometimes when she gets put in her cot during the day. she sleeps through the night and goes to bed fine but hates the cot during the day. she has never made this sound when being held. her twin doesnt seem to do this he either smiles or cries properly!!!!

many thanks

Sometimes babies just make noises. They have a limited range, admittedly. If you're happy that the baby is warm, dry, clean, fed and well-winded then the whining noise is probably an early attempt to join in the conversation. Ask her if she's singing you a song

they're all different - DS (also 3 months) does this and as Chil says, I just assume he's trying to have a little conversation with me.

All babies go from thrilled to tears/whining in seconds. DD (now 2.8) was a straightforward smile/cry kind of girl. DS whinges and whines, but cries much more rarely. And a smile can turn into a whine very quickly

All part of burbling and cooing, even if it doesn't sound quite as lovely in real life as the name suggests Smile
