disobedience for the first time - but serious

DS (early 7) is normally very conscientious and obedient and although very capable of arguing his case lengthily, had an exemplary school report, including for outstanding behaviour.

But today, after I clearly said "Wait...wait...wait!" before assessing whether he could cross a road on his bike, he crossed it anyway.

I told him what the consequences could have been and (actually very calmly) that I was very angry. I said that if he chose to ignore a direct instruction to do with bike safety again, I would confiscate his bike for a month.

I'm thinking this should do the trick, but obviously, I can't take any risks if we've just hit a defiant curve. What would you do?

Welcome to the real world. Children test boundaries. Its normal.

Just wondering if your child actually heard you. Often seven year olds are in a world of their own. I find it better to say to my son that I expect him to stop at the road when he is stationary rather than calling out to him. You can then get him to repeat your instructions to be sure he has listened.

I am surprised that this is the first time you have been disobeyed. My 15 month old baby has discovered defiance.

Ha my 14 month has it off to a tee! So you are lucky to get to the age of 7!

reallytired, perhaps you were taking me too just a tad too literally. Of course he his development has been normal - just keen to stress that he's not a defiant child and there hasn't been a single instance like this with potentially serious consequences.

He doens't have hearing problems, although this is a thoughtful suggestion. Thanks.
