At what age should a child have their first dentist appointment?

My ds is 9mo and has 6 teeth. I clean them regularly and there are no problems but I'm wondering if he should have a dental checkup or is he too young? Sorry if its a stupid question but hes my pfb and I'm a bit clueless!

In general (from what I see on here) it seems that dentists will see them at about 2yrs old. My dentist wouldn't accept them for the waiting list until 2yrs.

DS had his first apt at 2yrs 3mo.

DD 'accidentally' her had first apt at 18mo as I asked the dentist about her teeth while we were there for DS and she got her up on the chair and had a look . They put her on the books there and then.

I am beyond obsessive with dental hygiene. I evenb floss their teeth sometimes, depending on how much energy I have and what mood they are in.

mine have all visited the dentist as soon as their first teeth came through and then at regular 6 monthly intervals since

my practice is very big on preventative dentistry tho!

Danthe4th · 02/08/2010 16:42

Mine have all come with me when I had my 6 monthly check up and been registered as soon as they got a tooth.

Your dentists are much better than ours! In my area no one was able to register until 2yrs! I assumed that was the norm.

Marjee · 02/08/2010 17:56

Thanks everyone, I'm terrified of dentists so I don't go for checkups . I'll phone the one nearest me and ask if they'll accept him yet.

Take him with you at your next check up and the dentist will advise you.

StormyWeather · 02/08/2010 17:58

Yes, I'd get him registered now if you can. Apart from anything else, it gets them used to going.

My son had his first check up at about 8 months. He's due for another one soon!

All the dentist did was mark which teeth had come in and advise me on brushing.

It depends on what area you live in - round here, NHS dentists won't register children until they're 3 (and this was confirmed by my HV). As DD1 already has 16 teeth at 16 months I'm a bit about this rule...

Seona1973 · 02/08/2010 18:15

both mine went with me from when they first got teeth and the dentist had a quick look.

purpletrees · 02/08/2010 18:33

I took mine when they were 4 and 2 - together. 4yo fine, prob should have taken him earlier. 2yo refused to open mouth, so not much point really.

Both DDs went from about 6/7 mths, DD1 had no teeth and DD2 had 4. It was more to get them used to going and getting used to our dentist. He's a very big guy (6ft 5ish) and I think small kids could find him a bit intimidating but he's very nice.

Actually he scares me alittle
