Swimming lessons - what to expect?

I have taken advantage of my wages this month and signed my children up to swimming lessons. They are 4 and 7 and will go for 30 minutes a week, at the same time, in the same pool. It's group learning apparently, and I pay £3.40 each per session, with a commitment to 12 sessions if they enjoy the taster session and want more.

What is likely to happen? Will my 4 year old be safe?

Why wouldn't he be safe?
Early swim learning is all about water confidence and tends to be play-based.

DS1 has been going to swimming lessons on his own since he was three and loves it. They'll get used to swimming with lots of different types of floats, kicking with straight legs, floating in a star shape, jumping in, putting head under water, etc.

Some of DS's friends, mainly girls, can swim a length now at age 4! I wasn't 9 until I could do that!

They'll be very safe. He's done the sort of stuff effjay said, plus treading water etc. DS is 4.5 and has just got his 25m certificate for swimming on his back unaided. Now he's learning front crawl
