Please rethink your use of baby oil and Dentinox!
My DS (now 8 months) has eczema which started exactly like your son's -red bumpy patches on his cheeks - when he was about 3 weeks' old.
I went through a phase of experimentation, thinking there was something I could pick up off the shelf in the chemists to sort it out. I got the same stuff you are using - baby oil and Dentinox. It got worse - covering his whole face and occasionally flared up so that his whole torso was covered in hives.
Embarrassingly it was the HV who picked up on it at one of DS's weigh ins, and booked me in to see a dermatology nurse (who herself has suffered badly from eczema). She made me take it seriously, and said that baby oil (and all Johnson's products) were "the work of the devil" for those with skin conditions because they contain so much perfume. Similarly, Dentinox is stuffed full of chemicals.
Everything I now use is soooo gentle - olive oil, hemp seed oil etc. I wouldn't dream of trying to comb out cradle cap because that is just scratching the itch. All our products are very neutral, nothing perfumed. I was prescribed hydrocortisone to deal with the flare ups. Frankly, there comes a point when nothing else can get it under control and the poor mites do really suffer. If it's not going, I'd go and see your HV/GP and get some proper stuff.
Other tips:
-
keep him cool - the heat will make him more itchy;
-
he is scratchy his face because it itches. The only way really to sort this out is to treat the itch, everything else is just a form of restraint. But I would recommend Scratchsleeves here to prevent your boy from doing himself damage;
-
avoid non-natural fibres. His skin will be worse in non-breathable fabrics;
-
be aware that it will probably get worse in winter - central heating is a killer as it sucks all the moisture out of his skin;
-
moisturise, moisturise, moisturise;
-
have a look at the Allergies board, there is loads of helpful advice there.
Good luck, it's not nice seeing your LO in distress. I cling to the statistic that nearly all kids grow out of it by the time they are 5, and about half get rid of it by the time they are 2. Let's hope your DS's skin gets better soon.
