Still no properly announced words here. well mama. dada.
eye = bye. but that is literally it.
He is sweet.a nd understands everything. when i ask him to get his shoes he does. puts things int he bin. when i call them to dinner, i say "okay" "ready". ds1(6), dh and ds2(now 1 and 3/4, 21 mths) all come running. "eady, eady" he says.
Please would you mind telling me how many words your child can currently say. and list them. because i am starting to get worried. is it the tongue tie ? it was snipped early.
or nothing to worry about ?
is it best to mention it to hv to get a salt referal started, even if later i don't need it. these things do take a long time , don't they.
or maybe i am totally over-reacting. if i am , please say. I can take it

Hi there my DS will be 21 month at the end of this month and he says mama, dada and a few other words that only we know what he means, so I wouldn't worry. Plus he too was diagnose with a tongue tie when he was born, the sepecialist was not worried and said he will be fine.
He does now seem to have a VERY long tongue
Like your DS he understands EVERYTHING! But also he seems to get a little frustrated when I don't understand him

Bumping for you. DD is 21 months and has quite a few 'words', i.e. related sounds that DH and I recognise but mostly have to interpret for others. But I have no idea what's in the 'normal' range. You're probably over-reacting a little bit , but if you're starting to get worried maybe mention it to HV just to put your mind at rest?

burtie got there first with bumping

Oblomov · 27/07/2010 09:14

burtie, ds2 has a very long, flappy around tongue.
on my MN PN thread most of the others are saying alot more recogniseable words than my ds2.
At my local PN group, the 4 others are alot more advanced.
I know i shouldn't compare. i know they all do things at different ages. its just the tongue tie thing that bothers me. It his babbling totally normal, or is it related to the tongue tie ?

mind you wem, thank you , your posts puts it into perspective. thank you.

It won't be anything to do with the tongue, but I don't think you are over-reacting.

I would suggest a SALT referral.

Oblomov · 27/07/2010 09:52

Phoned hv. she says she thinks its too early to do a salt referal. i appreciate that she is right. she says to phone nearer the time for a 2 yr check, (october) and when she does it, if she thinks he needs a referal, she will do one then.
seems reasonable.

I would say it was too early, particularly as a DS2...I don't know what the actual reseach says, but anecdotal evidence definitely points to subsequent children speaking clearly at a slightly later stage than firstborns.

Also, is he very vocal? I find my DS2 (20mths) very vocal although he says very few words clearly. He does repeat new words once or twice - sometimes exactly backwards! - never to say them again.

I wouldn't be worried at all. Give it a few months then revisit.

And don't put too much pressure on him to enunciate - as long as he keep communicating with you, then things should progress and you shouldn't have any problems with him being reluctant to unsuccessfully pronounce words.

Oblomov · 27/07/2010 10:06

YCTT, he babbles. quite alot. most words sound like dada. he can say "oh oh" when he tips food all over the floor. so one assumes this is all alright.
convinces herself. try not to worry. try not to worry.
enjoy. enjoy. do not worry.
