ditching the bath chair

DS is 14 months old now and I think we've left it a bit late to get rid of his swivel chair, as now he is a total nightmare in the bath. Has anyone else ever had this problem? He's been walking comfortably for about 2 months now, and instead of sitting nicely in the bath he's constantly walking around and trying to climb out. I'm so worried he's going to slip and bump his head and he has total paddies when I try and make him sit. Grrr!!!

He probably will slip and bump his head but, to be honest, that's probably what needs to happen so that he understands why he needs to sit nicely. Provide him with plenty of bath toys to sit and play with. He won't come to any harm in a shallow bath if you're in the same room.

I would just get a bath mat and let him climb around. DD (nearly 14mths) does that and they soon learn how not to slip.

Obv need to have an eye on him all the time though.

He is less likely to hurt himself (in terms of bumps and bruises) with a nice bath full of cushiony water than he was crawling around the kitchen floor.

My son (13.5 months) is just beginning to cruise and never sits in the tub. I either hold him with one hand or just let him get on, as we have a non-slip pad down. Not that he never slips.

He does sit on occasion if he's really tired or decides one of his toys is especially interesting. My biggest problem is him pouring water out of the tub!

my 15 mo never sits still for longer than a couple of minutes. have no idea how to get him to stay sitting - even though he's had LOADs of sllips and bumps in the bath its not deterring him!

we also have a corner bath with a seat which he has recently started sitting on, holding on to the rails and sliding himself into the water with a crash. its the best game ever in his opinion but not a good idea in mine.

We bath DS (15-months) twice a day in water upto his neck (its an ezcema routine), he has a bathmat on the bottom of the bath. He gets up, turns round, throws the toys in and out of the bath, splashes us until there is more water on the floor than in the bath - and he loves it. At the weekend he tripped and went under the water, we of course freaked out, while he stared up at us from under the water. Since then he has tried to put his head under the water for another go at every opportunity!
I'm hoping it s a phase he'll get over like the banging the TV, trying to climb out of the window, putting his hands in the cupboards past the child locks - you know a phase, lasts 3-weeks, drives me nuts, worries me half to death that he'll kill himself, then he decides suddenly that spinning round and round until he is sick is way better.

My DD also has the water very deep, up to her neck.

It actually means less chance of banging her head as there is little of the bath wall exposed - if she falls she is right in the water (and I leap up and grab her!)

A few tears and snuffles when it happens but no disasters.

mrsflux · 26/07/2010 12:47

you have very deep baths!

ds is about 1m tall so there is no way i'd manage that.
he's been walking since he was 1yo and there is no end in sight for this phase!

Thanks ladies, just ordered a full length non slip bath mat now. Will also try very deep water too, hopefully this will be something he will grow out of soon before I lose my sanity!
