Tiny 14 month old

My 14 month old is tiny - he is 17lb (just) and approx 70cm. He has a hole in the heart, eats very very well, drinks his milk, and is developing normally apart from his size and lack of teeth! He wasn't premature but was 6lb 1oz when he was born. The doctors have done numberous tests to try and find out why he is so tiny but we are hitting a brick wall. Is anybody else in a similar situation? Thanks

Have a friend of a relative who has a tiny DD (sorry, don't know her weight) who to all intents and purposes is fine as you say - great appetite etc. just small. She's a real sweetie too.

The docs have done numerous tests to no avail. She is just very petite and she did strength-related things like walking a bit later too.

She's now nearly 2 and they have decided to try and ignore and let her go at her own pace.

I believe you are not alone, I knew somebody who's DD also weight the same as your DS at birth, the last time I saw her she was still very small (I believe she should have been around 16 months and definitively not taller than 75 cm).

Does he seem to feel well? It sounds like it from your post. Have they tested BS and done a genetics screening?

Hilbil - I post on the Heartline message board, www.heartline.org.uk/forums/index.php? It's a support group for parents of children with congenital heart defects.

There are a few mums with quite tiny children, why not come along and have a chat with them.

My little cousin had the same thing! She is still small at 6 yrs old, but just looks petite! She is fit and healthy too!!!!!

My dd is also tiny, maybe 20lbs at the same age, and 72cm tall. She also had a hole in her heart (Ventricular Septal Defect) which was repaired when she was 17months. She is now 4, and still tiny heightwise, but not skinny.

I don't know if this is true, but I think even a small hole could be making his body work harder and use up more calories?

I think dd's height may be genetic, as neither dh and I are not perticularly tall

The other day I really put my foot in in it cos I was at my mate's house and she was minding a little boy I had never met before. He appeared to be about 9 months old and he was walking around! And I said to his mum - ooh, isn't he clever, walking already! And she said: 'what do you mean, he's 15 months old!'
I felt awful!
Not really a relevant post, but I thought I would share that there are plenty of tiny ones out there with NO health probs, so all things considered, you little one sounds like he is doing great!

my dd and ds are big they were 75cm at 9 months old!
However they are skinny little things and there weight has never been big . They are 26lb at 19m

one of my twins at 2.5 is still only about 20-21 lbs, and about 86 cm tall (haven't measured lately).

He is growing steadily at his own rate.

Just try and make sure she gets lots of good nutritious food (veggies contain a lot of calcium), and fats too, and lots of sleep.

Given his lack of teeth it may be something like a skeleton that is young for his age - ie tends to develop later - something about bone age being less than actual age.

I guess in a few years if she is still small then you and the doctors may end up considering growth hormones.

My dd was 18lbs and 74cm at 16 months,
She is now 10 years and 10 months, she is petite, and noticeably smaller than most other girls her age, but very fit and healthy, I struggle to keep up with her when we walk to school together.I still get comments on how small she is, but in my opinion "small is beautiful".

My god daughter has had an op for a hole in the heart, and is doing very well, try not to worry.
