ds has recently discovered his genitals. keeps playing with them. this is causing problems as he is stuffing his hands into his nappy to do it so that;

  1. he wets his cot at night
  2. he wets the floor during the day as he forgets to pop it back into the nappy!
  3. he is doing it in public and I am finding it embaressing.

Should I just ignore and hope it is a passsn phase???

Hi Janey,

I'm trying not to grin too much here - my DS went through a phase of doing this with similar results to yours. It is a passing phase and is best ignored or better still distracted from. Christopher Green in "Toddler Taming" says that toddlers do this because it feels nice and they are bored. During the day it's best to distract him as much as possible - just grab his hand and guide him into something else - especially in public. With the daytime distraction might come less of a need to fiddle at night - but there's always Pampers bedmats temporarily if not.
My DS eventually just stopped. Ignore tutting members of the public - he's just a toddler who's discovered his bits feel quite nice to handle. He's not being deliberately sexual. As he gets older socialisation will take over and he'll save his fiddling for more - ahem - private occasions.

DT2 (18m) is currently at that stage. It's only annoying when he forgets to put his penis back and the whole place gets a soaking.

Like all stages... this too will pass!

thanks - it is nice to know he isn't the only one!

ways I get round this are vests that popper up between the legs and grobag...

janeybops · 22/08/2005 20:11

what a good idea, shame it is a bit warm for vests at moment, plus he has recently moved from using gro-bag to a quilt. so that may explain a lot!

Hiya not got this ..........yet.
But we still have gro bags at night here.
He has a fiddle though when he is on the potty.
I try to ignore him when he is doing it.
The more fuss I make or tell him not to do it, th e more he laughs and does it.

MarsLady · 22/08/2005 20:24

DT2 was having a good fiddle in the bath today. I have to confess that it doesn't bother me, but that is probably cos DS1 used to do it and has pretty much grown out of it... well as much as a bloke can anyway!

Tumblemum · 22/08/2005 20:42

have to say though, that on the rare occasion he has unfettered access he makes the most of it though, grobags are great IMO anti climbing out of cots, keep them warm and stop them taking their nappies off etc... sometimes wonder if and how we will ever make the transition

My DS actively points his bits out to me "Look" he says excitedly.

"Oh yes - you've got a willy" I exclaim.

Then he points out his belly button

"Ooh look"

"Oh yes - a belly button too. A willy and a belly button - my goodness you'll go far in life having those"

. Arn't toddlers just so cute?
