Moving into a 'big boy' bed. sob.

DS is 20 months. He was having a mega wobbly today and has a tendency to hurt himself when in the throes of one. I put him into his cot to get him to calm down and keep him safe. Walked out of the room (was making our bed next door), heard an almighty crash and discovered him lying on the floor looking quite shocked by it all.

I'm sure that everything I've read has said that as soon as they can climb out, they are safer in a bed.

Luckily, we have a cot bed, so DH transformed it this evening and he had milk and stories in bed for the first time (the cot prevented this somewhat) which was lovely and then he went straight to sleep and is still fast asleep with no falling out.

Have I done the right thing here? DH just came down having checked on him looking a bit forlorn and wondering whether 20 months is a bit young for this kind of thing.

Any advice?

I moved my ds into a bed at about the same age. He can escape from anything and tbh a bed was always gong to be safer than the mega tumble he took out of his cot. He's been fine, no falling out at all. The only thing is we have had to make his room pretty much devoid of fun as otherwise he'd never sleep. He has a shelf of books he can look at and a small box of cars and trains that he'll play with before dropping off. He will get up and play if he's not particuarly tired, but always gets himself back into bed before falling asleep. He's just turned 2.

A lot of people have their children 18 months apart and the need to pass on the cot means the toddler goes up to a bed. If the bed is quite low to the floor, if he's well tucked in and if he tends to be a good sleeper anyway then he'll be just fine.

as he could get out i dont think you really had much of a choice. mine moved at around the same age because he started climbing out too, it is nice being able to have the stories in bed as you say
if you think he might fall out just put the bed guard thing on the side
we had a bit of trouble at first with him not staying in bed, but didnt last too long and now he is fine, and seems as though your ds was fine with it so i wouldnt worry too much

DD moved into a bed at 18mths.

She was absouletly fine. Never fell out or even climbed out even though she can easily.
We had 3 unsettled nights where she would stir and realise it was more open but she took to it realy well

Hope you had a good night

My DS went into the bed at about the same time. He had climbed out of his cot and ruptured his testicle and had to have it removed..... definitely the right decision to move to a bed before he becomes too adventurous.

Thanks all for your replies - am sure I've done the right thing. He slept through last night, waking later than usual (7! Practically a lie-in) and has just gone down for a nap with no getting out.

I guess he was ready for it. I will miss the baby in a cot days. Thank god I'm 7 months pregnant!

x-post with scurryfunge. Ouch. Definitely did the right thing then. Hope your DS recovered well from that one.

He is 15 now and can now consider a "false" one if he wants to but it will not affect his fertility thankfully.

Moved mine at 16 months - she was on the verge of throwing herself out of the cot and on to the floor. I don't know anyone who has had them in a cot past 2, so I think 20 months is probably average?
