Hair washing...

Hi All,
Over the last few months our DS (2.4 years) has decided he hates having his hair washed. He screams and screams and screams! Not sure why as he is happy to be splashed and water tipped over his head when in the swimming pool, he finds it funny then!

Has anyone used the hair washing aids you can buy (eye shield, rounded jug etc...)
Are they worth trying or just gimmicks?

Thanks

My DD has always screamed during hair washing. I tried the rounded jug thing, which was unpopular. I now use the plastic teapot from her tea set to pour the water over her head.
good luck!

We use this and it works pretty well.

We used a cup to pour water over the children's head when they went through that phase. And we washed their hair only once a week

The only thing that worked with DD was a flannel over her eyes. She doesn't cry at hair-washing anymore, but the screaming at hair-brushing/drying is fairly epic !

Plus definitely second only washing hair once a week. Anymore often than that, and we would have given DD a skinhead by now!!!

I'm a brutal mother who just uses the shower appliance willy-nilly, despite screaming and pleading.

She's now very good at cooperating with hair washing and doesn't seem too deeply psychologically scarred!

Our DD liked to wear goggles when she went through a 'I hate hair washing' phase.
We also just washed her hair every week (sometimes longer) as it looked fine and I saw no point in doing battle!

girliefriend · 20/07/2010 19:23

Yes went with the flannel and getting dd to tip her head right back which sort of worked plus sometimes a treat if she didn't scream too much! Amazingly she now washes her own hair (she is now 4) and actualy is the one to suggest maybe she should wash her hair tonight!

I used to make dd lie down so her hair was in the water but her face was not

the sit up, suds, lie down again to rinse and done

Orissiah · 23/07/2010 10:15

Chibi, what a terrific idea - I'll try that.

My DD, 2, always screams blue murder when she has her hair washed. I just let her as it's over within a minute. Only once a week hair wash for us too.

But I like Chibi's idea.

Cashew · 23/07/2010 14:25

We do it only once a week too - DS has such fine hair that's all it needs. I tried doing a bit more regularly to see if that made a difference (ie getting used to it, but no, still screaming!)
Still undecided whether or not to try the rounded jug...
Guess we'll have to put it down as another 'phase' and hope it doesn't last too long!

Ear plugs and serious amounts of patience, I would just let him protest and get it done as quickly as you can . I think most kids go through the hating hair washing phase.
I have done the lying dowm method too and it works so long as they will lie down!!

Hi, we bought a hair wash cap that we got from Boots (£3.99) and it has been our miracle buy. My 3yo used to get so worked up having her hair washed she used to be sick in the bath and it was so traumatic. Since getting the cap we have had no tears. She lies down in bath fine and I can rinse her hair with a jug and no water goes down her face due to the cap - definately recommend it. xx
