What to say when my DS tells me that he's 'pointing'!!

My 2yo DS has got in the habit of telling me when he's got an erection! We call it 'pointing' so at least it doesn't traumatise old ladies when we're out!!!

But I don't quite know how to respond... I've been saying things like 'clever willy' or 'big willy' or 'don't worry it'll stop in a minute'... But he still seems to find it rather disconcerting.

I don't want to ignore it because I don't want him to think there is something 'wrong' with it, but I feel there must be a better response.

Any suggestions please?

I'm sorry but 'clever willy'

I dont have any boys so I have no idea how I woudl deal with it

sorry no help at all

bumping so you get some actul advice instead of hopeless sniggering

KnitterNotTwitter · 19/07/2010 11:43

I know it is asking for a good snigger - and I do find myself chuckling quietly when it happens which I guess is part of the reason I think that someone else must have a good suggested course of action!!!

My ds is almost 3.

I just ignore it and distract him with something else if needs be. Its worked fine so far. I don't think by ignoring it that he'll think it's wrong

Oh lord, I'm sure DS's instruction manual didn't mention this (he's only 9 months and already VERY interested in the groin area).

Having had a girl first, I think little boys are going to be a shock to the system!

maxybrown · 19/07/2010 13:22

Hee hee I would tell him that's fine but it's just something that happens and he doesn't have to tell you everytime. Tell him it's ok for it to happen. Though to be honest at 2, they like to tell you every morsel thing so think he will just grow out of it (the telling you that is!) DS almost 3 has just stopped telling me every time he burps. I said just say excuse me, you don't need to tell me every time - and after me saying that 5 hundren million times it has finally sunk in tis funny, don't worry about it, not at 2!!

I've told my son his penis does that when it's 'happy' but - because I understand from men that it can be rather uncomfortable to walk etc - if he'd like to wait for everything to calm down before carrying on then that's fine. This seemed to work and several years down the track I can still recognise that slightly panicky look of discomfort and know not to interfere! If there's a Dad in the picture, this is definitely something for him to talk to your son about.

I tell my boys to leave it alone and it will go back to normal.

pranma · 19/07/2010 15:37

I just used to say,'Oh yes that happens sometimes-it'll go back in a minute.

KnitterNotTwitter · 21/07/2010 14:49

Thanks everyone - like the idea of saying that it is 'happy'

"Clever willy"? Don't. Just don't.

Say "oh well, never mind."
