Thinking of taking our little boy to the Railway Children play for his 3rd birthday, but his dad thinks he is too young. The info on the show says it is suitable for children from 2, but it is 2 hours 20 running time with an interval, so probably 2 sessions of 1 hour. It also says children can be taken out if necessary so they seem to be quite child friendly.

He is reasonably good at sitting still and being calm, and LOVES trains. But will this be too much? Anyone got any advice or experiences of taking this age group to similar?

We took our very active won't sit still DDs to see Chris and Pui and they suprised us by sitting still through the performance.
They are 3 and 2,we are already booked for pantomime too.

Sounds very long to me but maybe if it's aimed at 2 year olds it'd be ok?

My twins sat and enjoyed school plays, ballets and theatre shows at that age.. take some boxes of raisins, and a little notepad and pencil.. they will surprise you!!

DD went to the theatre with her nursery school the month after she turned 3. She sat next to the teacher as it was her first week at nursery.
She sat through it no problem. The teacher was entertained throughout the performance by DD's running commentary of the Postman Pat play.
"That's not a real van, you can see his feet at the bottom"
"That's not a real birthday cake"
"That's not a real cat"
etc.
When I took her to the cinema at for the first time at 3, she said
"Where's the remote control, it's too loud. Turn it down"

DS sat through The Singing Kettle which was just over one hour long - he was just about to turn 3yo at that point. I think because it's a new experience for them, they're likely to be glued to the performance. It's the novelty factor isn't it?

My Dd sat through a panto at just over 2 years and was absolutely fine, but it depends on the child.
