How much is too much sleep for a 13 month old?

13 mo DS sleeps from 1930 straight through to 0830, then from 1030 - 1330 and again from 1530 - 1630. So a grand total of 17 hours a day! Mostly I have to wake him up. I know I really shouldn't complain, but am starting to wonder if this is too much sleep, and if he's not getting enough time to play, learn and develop. He shows no signs of cutting back on his naps. He seems to be hitting all the normal development milestones. I just don't know anyone else whose toddler sleeps this much!

We live in a Mediterranean country and the weather is v hot at the moment. Maybe he'll just start sleeping less when the weather cools down?

Deliberately not posting this under the "Sleep" topic as I know most people there have the opposite problem...

My 12mo has about 16hrs, 13hrs at night at least 2hrs morning nap and at least 1hr afternoon nap. I checked with my HV as it seemed excessive to me but she assured me it was fine. DD always been a sleepyhead so I just enjoy it, gives me plenty on time with DS who's 3. They need what they need, so long as she continues to go to bed with no issues and sleeps through I won't reduce her naps, soon enough they will be refusing naps and we'll be frantically chasing them all day so enjoy it while you can

Thanks Sasha. Good to have some reassurance! Will make the most of it while it lasts

My DS was just like this at that age... even now he is 2.2yrs he can sleep from 1900-0800 and nap from 1300-1600.

People didn't believe me that he was sleeping so much when he was younger!!!

Some children just need more sleep I think...

Don't worry. Sleep can be 'developmental' too - gives them a chance to process everything they see in the day. If he's bright and active when he's awake then nothing to worry about.

DD1 was like this pretty much, and still has lots of sleep at nearly 3 - in fact she sleeps about an hour more a day than her 1 year old sister (and would be more, except we get bored waiting for her to wake up and go and get her up). She hasn't suffered for it developmentally. Just wish DD2 was the same, it would be heaven!

So long as he eats and drinks enough and meets his milestones I can't see a problem. My 15-month old sleeps a similar amount. 7-7 at night and then 11-2.15pm at lunchtime. We live in the UK and the weather is not warm at the moment. I just consider myself lucky.

My youngest is 3 in August. She has 13 hours overnight and 3ish hours in an afternoon. She just loves her sleep!

Great to hear DS isn't the only one who likes his sleep! He's incredibly active when he's awake. Will relax and go with the flow on this one.
