10mo angel with fingers of steel :-$

How on earth do I stop my 10mo DD trying to pull my face off by the lips?

She grabs, digs in and yanks. She seems to be very tense as she's doing it but not as tense as I am . I wonder whether it's frustration / anger. She seems to find it funny when I say OW .

It's been days and I have scratches all over my nose and mouth (yes I trim her nails but she really grabs).

Strategies?

Maybe I overdid the emoticons there... blame it on my being face-obsessed at the moment, what with all the excruciating pain an all.

my 20 month old does this to my nipples when feeding. It drives me to the brink. When I pull her hand off she getsvery cross.

No advice but much sympathy.

don't let her do it?
my 1 yr old is similar, so now if i see his hands move towards me i just hold them and simply don't let him do it
if he gets angry i put him down

"no mummy doesn't like that" whilst firmly remove hands/mouth from offended area.

Repeat x 500

Oh geez, my DD 10 months is doing the exact same thing and she is sooo strong. At the moment, she grabs my face and sticks her finger as far down my nose as she can It bloody hurts, I never knew nasal cavaties were so painful! And she is very hard to get off! I think she is coming in for a kiss and instead it's a frenzied face grapple! And as for "ow" - well, that is Mummy being funny.

So no strategies I am sorry but sympathy from one scratched Mum to another!

'don't let her do it' made me laugh! You're right of course TIY but she is like lightning and I don't want to have to ban all contact with my baby! Maybe I just need to be able to catch the glint in her eye a bit quicker.

I'm so glad it's not just me. Thank god she hasn't discovered my nasal cavities though Chunky.

Actually I don't allow her hands near my nipples at all out of sheer terror.

Maybe I shouldn't be saying OW. I shall employ my usual mantra, 'If in doubt, ignore it.' But she is bound to see my eyes watering.

And mutual sympathy to you all too.

Maybe we should put them in mittens?

DD started doing this at about the same age - she's 14m now and still does it but a bit more gently now (still have to keep her away from nipples though, which she seems to regard in the light of climbing hooks). Favourite is trying to pull your eyes out (apparently).

Again - much sympathy but no suggestions!

i made a point of either not holding mine close enough to my face for them to do it, or, if they were facing me and they did it more than twice then I either turned them round or put them down

it doesn't mean having no contact with them, but you don't have to sit there and let them hurt you!

DS has been doing this for ages - he's also ten months. Latest trick is clamping himself on to my jaw and biting down with his new, very sharp teeth. Screaming is funny. REAL screaming is better than fake.

We occasionally wonder if he's just going to be a serial killer/vampire and have done with it.

blinder · 15/07/2010 23:39

I have come to the conclusion it's an anger thing. Today she was contemplating grabbing me but though better of it. She got lots and lots of kisses for that. Then later, when she was frustrated and tired, she went for it and grabbed hard.

It's almost a way to get me to notice how annoyed she is.

I don't just take it TiS but once her vice like nails are embedded she's hard to prize off. If I keep her away from my face she'll go for my arm or leg!

But there was definitely less of it today and she now seems to have more restraint.

And ooh Moomma, have you been bitten on the bridge of the nose yet?

Babies have the empathy of your common or garden psychopath.

Octavia protect your eyes for gods sake!
