Unusual boys names

mike1969 · 07/07/2010 22:06

Hi all,

Desperately trying to think of an unusual name for a boy, ideally linked with nature. The names I like, but dh does not, are:

Eden
Ronan
Stirling
Landon
Caspian.

So probably no-goers but it gives an idea of the sort of thing that appeals.

Love River and Forrest but wouldn't work. Trying to think of some other names but totally at a loss.

Any help would be so appreciated : ))

Did you like any of the boys' nature names suggested on your recent thread about the name Rosen?

lowrib · 08/07/2010 00:30

Ossian (means little deer, and has beautifulceltic myths attached to it)

Rowan

Taliesin (again had beautiful stories attached to it)

Aneurin (pronounced An-I-rin with the stress on the I)

clpsmum · 08/07/2010 09:09

Bracken
Sage
Clay
Jay
Lachlan (means lake apparently?)

BessieBoots · 08/07/2010 09:13

I like Aneurin too, but would pronounce it An-Ey-Rin. Taliesin is cool because you can use nn Tal.
What about Jay? I also once knew a boy called Wren. You should get a bird book and have a look through it!

clpsmum · 08/07/2010 09:22

Quoted from Wikipedia

"
Taliesin began life as Gwion Bach, a servant to the enchantress Ceridwen. Ceridwen had a beautiful daughter and an ugly son named Morfran (also called Avagddu), whose appearance no magic could cure.

Ceridwen sought to give him the gift of wisdom as compensation and cooked a potion granting inspiration (Awen), which had to be constantly stirred and cooked for a year and a day.

A blind man named Morda tended the fire beneath the cauldron, while Gwion Bach stirred. The first three drops of liquid from this cauldron would give wisdom; the rest was a fatal poison.

Three hot drops spilled onto Gwion's thumb as he stirred, and he instinctively put his thumb in his mouth, instantly gaining wisdom and knowledge. The first thought that occurred to him was that Ceridwen would kill him, so he ran away.

All too soon he heard her fury and the sound of her pursuit. He turned himself into a hare on the land and she became a greyhound. He turned himself into a fish and jumped into a river: she then turned into an otter. He turned into a bird in the air, and in response she became a hawk.

Exhausted, he turned into a single grain of corn and she became a hen and ate him. She became pregnant. She resolved to kill the child, knowing it was Gwion, but when he was born he was so beautiful that she couldn't, so she threw him in the ocean in a leather bag.

The baby was found by Elffin, the son of Gwyddno Garanhir, 'Lord of Ceredigion', while fishing for salmon. Surprised at the whiteness of the boy's brow, he exclaimed "dyma Dal Iesin", meaning "this is a radiant brow." Taliesin, thus named, began to recite beautiful poetry, saying:

Fair Elffin, cease your lament!
....Though I am weak and small,
On the wave crest of the surging sea,
I shall be better for you
Than three hundred shares of salmon.
Elffin of noble generosity,
Do not sorrow at your catch.
Though I am weak on the floor of my basket,
There are wonders on my tongue....''

Amazed, Elffin asked how a baby could talk. Again Taliesin replied with poetry:

"Floating like a boat in its waters,
I was thrown into a dark bag,
and on an endless sea, I was set adrift.
Just as I was suffocating, I had a happy omen,
and the master of the Heavens brought me to liberty."

That was perhaps a tad long! But I do love names with stories behind them.

violetsmile · 09/07/2010 07:25

Ronan is lovely but will be forever linked for anyone alive in the 90s with Ronan Keating. Not really a problem, it's still a beautifu name.

Eden is nice but I think it sounds feminine, not sure why but I imagine a little girl being called that and it working far better than a boy.

Don't like Stirling at all.

Landon is nice.

Caspian is very nice but not sire if it's a valid name now days, seems a but pretentious to be taken seriously.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 09/07/2010 07:30

Eden is a girl's name.

lowrib · 09/07/2010 09:44

I know a young man called Eden, and I knew him long before I ever heard of it as a girls name, so for me Eden is definitely a boys name!

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 09/07/2010 13:08

Ok, but I know 4 female Edens, and Anita Shreve's Eden Close was published a couple of years ago about a girl, so I wouldn't take the risk these days.

Plus it's a bit wanky.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 09/07/2010 13:58

I also like Skyler/Sky

What about Gray?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 09/07/2010 14:00

Asher nn Ash

Pinner35 · 09/07/2010 14:01

I know a lad called Raven.....wouldn't work for everyone, but I like it,

Honeywitch · 09/07/2010 14:09

OH bother - I forgot about blooming Ronan Keating!!! I had this down as a favourite because of Robert deNiro (ronan film) and the fact that it means little seal.... Now I wouldn't touch it with a broomhandle!!

meadowlarks · 09/07/2010 20:58

Eden is unisex. Now stop bickering. It was on my list for a boy, but I have a female friend called Eden too.

janeite · 09/07/2010 21:09

I like Rowan and Asher. In fact, dd1 would probably have been Rowan Asher, had she been ds.

Eden - only see this as a girl's name

Ronan - hate Ronan K so no way

Stirling - really dislike this, sorry

Landon - isn't he the chap in those silly Jasper FFFFFFFForde books? It's a bit too Mills and Boon-ish for me

Caspian - sorry but this sounds very try-hard and wanting to be out there to me.

Jem (I know it's a different spelling but it sounds like gem, so links to nature, maybe?

Lee? Not over-fond but...

Jay?
