Tristan?

We really like the name Tristan. Just wondering what others thoughts are? Is it a name most people have heard of? I like unusual names but not too unusual like my own where I always have to spell it out to new people! Thanks for your comments.

I absolutely adore it. I named my son Tristan, but be prepared for stupid people to spell/say it wrong. My grandmother called him Christian for years.

I think it's a name for all ages. Tris when he is a child and Tristan is a grown up name. My mum calls him Trissy.

I chose it because there are relatively few tristans out there and no one could claim I named my son after them.

Always makes me think of triste = sad in French....

KnitterNotTwitter · 07/07/2010 09:52

Like it a lot... known, spellable, but not common....

annasophia · 07/07/2010 09:54

I too think of Triste (Sad) when I hear Tristan. Nice name otherwise.

BridesheadRegardless · 07/07/2010 09:55

I love it.

I've ever known one, he was my best friend who lived next door when I was a child. We did everything together...then I moved away and we lost touch, but I've never forgotten him.

He was a gentle little boy, but with a wicked sense of adventure, so that's what I imagine Trsitan's to be like.

coffeefestival · 07/07/2010 10:13

I like it.

Hedwig3 · 07/07/2010 10:38

I knew a naughty Tristan when I was at secondary school - a headmaster's sone. Didn't put me off the name though. It's a good choice.

LetThereBeRock · 07/07/2010 12:14

I love it. My dp is one and he's lovely.

muggglewump · 07/07/2010 12:17

Love it, DD would have been Tristan if she'd been a boy.

Hannele · 07/07/2010 21:37

It's good to see all the positive comments so I think we will be sticking to this name. Now need to decide on a middle name!

foreverastudent · 08/07/2010 09:29

I like it but other people have told me it sounds quite 'posh public schoolboy'.

Kathleen123 · 08/07/2010 14:45

i went to infants school with a Tristan and he always had a snotty face.
Sorry it doesnt help but reading the name reminded me.

Merle · 11/07/2010 07:16

Interested to see Kathleen123's comments. My mum, also called Kathleen, named my brother Tristan in the 70's. It stood out quite a lot then, (perhaps until 'All Creatures Great and Small).

Once someone said 'how's he going to manage with that name when he's working on a building site?'. My mum said 'he won't be, that's the point of giving him a name like 'Tristan'.

Rubena · 11/07/2010 07:27

Sounds American to me but I like it

StealthPolarBear · 11/07/2010 07:29

I love it and have one
Yes, he will get called Christian / Tristian for a while
Means loud and noisy - be warned
And when DS was just starting to talk he called himself Tis-tis, it's become my pet name for him

diddl · 11/07/2010 08:11

I like Tristian.

Ondine · 11/07/2010 09:20

I really like it, one of those rare boy's names which is not used a lot but is still mainstream enough not to be odd.

I think of Tristan and Isolde so it's quite a romantic name to me.
