I loved this as a child, I called a teddy this, and still like it, but no one seems to use it, is it cos it's actually horrid??

Kyle. He'll have people arguing around him like there's no tomorrow.
Beadle. He'll play tricks on people.
Clarkson. Enough said.

Concordia · 05/07/2010 18:45

i like it but DH hates it.
I think it probably sounds a bit posh for around here.

Concordia · 05/07/2010 18:45

i didn't think of kyle beadle or clarkson btw

BridesheadRegardless · 05/07/2010 18:49

Yes, well I liked it way before Kyle/clarkson associations but maybe that's why it doesn't get used much now.

It's never been massively popular though has it?

I like Jem as a nickname too.

My x bil, called Jem. He hated it. Although it suited him.

said · 05/07/2010 20:43

It's a bit of a Nigel name I think

babywrangler · 05/07/2010 20:57

He'll get called Jez not Jem though.

Tanga · 05/07/2010 20:59

Not keen on Jeremy but love Jem.

TheNextMrsDepp · 05/07/2010 21:00

Bleargh!

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 05/07/2010 21:00

I used to have a huge unsuitable crush on a Jeremy/Jem, so I have a very soft spot for it.

MrsJohnDeere · 05/07/2010 21:10

My brother, a Jeremy, got picked on mercilessly because of his name. Seen as posh in an area that was very far from posh.

Fwiw the Jeremys I know (4 in total, all adults now) always had their name shortened to Jez or Jezza by other children. I'd never come across the Jem nn until MN.

Pingpong · 05/07/2010 21:13

no from me - sorry!
Can I add Jeremy Vine to the list of reasons not to!

belindarose · 05/07/2010 21:22

I love it. Never think of those awful Jeremys. Only the lovely Jeremy Hardy if I think of anyone. But we gave our DD a 'J' name, so will never use it. Would sound like Topsy and Tim.

Lymond · 05/07/2010 21:28

I know a lovely Jeremy, nn Jem. He's a cool 24 year old. I think its quite classic; you wouldn't know the age of the person from that name.

Jem can also be used as a nn for James.

pointydog · 05/07/2010 21:35

yes it's actually horrid

almostinvisiblewoman · 05/07/2010 21:47

ok but not if your surnames fisher

Tasala · 05/07/2010 21:59

I like it. Wouldn't use it but I like it. Jerome might be a little more useable.

ProzacTheGiggleFairy · 05/07/2010 21:59

Jeremy is not a bad name, the only thing that really sticks in my mind is the Pearl Jam song 'Jeremy', which does not have too much of a happy theme.

TBH there will not be many boys named Jeremy around nowdays, so if you like the name & it suits your surname, go for it.

mathanxiety · 06/07/2010 00:42

Anyone remember Jeremy Thorpe or am I just o-l-l-l-d?

I prefer Jeremiah by a long shot. Or Jerome.

coffeefestival · 06/07/2010 08:48

Prefer Jeremiah or Jerome.

Fanfare · 06/07/2010 10:07

I love Jeremy, but for me it's always been something of a "guilty pleasure" because no-one else I know seems to like it. Would also be horrified at the thought of it being shortened to Jez.

randomimposter · 06/07/2010 15:09

BIG vote for Jerome. Sadly whilst Jeremy in its detached form is fine, there are too many "strong" (for want of a better word) associations - most already mentioned! Although Jeremy Hardy is ok, and Paxman's alright for a grumpy bugger... (I remember Thorpe too ...)

CantSleepWontSleep · 06/07/2010 17:53

I gave birth to dc3 on Saturday and called him Jeremy. Obviously I don't think it's horrid at all!

mathanxiety · 06/07/2010 20:12

Congratulations -- hope all is well, CantSleepWontSleep

BridesheadRegardless · 07/07/2010 09:28

Oh how lovely cantsleepwontsleep!! Congratlaltions.

Obviously i think his name is gorgeous.
