Clara, Greta, Lola or Rosie?

Hello!

I'm due in 4 weeks and whilst don't know if it's a boy or girl but we are nearly there with a boys name (nearly!)

So, I'd really appreciate opinions/first impressions on these girls names as we are struggling to decide.

We really want a name that will 'age' well if you know what I mean, i.e. not just a little girls name. Something classic and pretty and not hugely popular.

Middle name will be Jean.

Many thanks!

Clara - lovely name.

Greta seems 'hard' to me for some reason. I quite like Gretchen though.

Lola - ok but a bit trendy.

Rosie - pretty but quite well-used.

Doozie · 01/07/2010 11:54

Clara Jean - lovely!

My ds was going to be Greta if he'd been a girl, I love it. Also love Clara. I was going to be called Clara (pn Clare-a like another lady on this thread) but my Mum chickened out as my surname began with a K and it didn't quite go. Am gutted as I have a really common name, and nowadays a surname that begins with M, so it would have been perfect! Ah well.

I liked Lola when pg with dd (who is nearly 7) but am not so keen now. Rosie always makes me think of chubby, pink-cheeked children, but I love Rose and Rosa.

I have a Greta and I get mixed reactions to it but mainly positive (although they might be lying). I know it is of Germanic origin but do you really think German when you hear it? Not that there's anything wrong with that it's just that we don't have any German connections..

I love Clara too by the way and it was the other name we were considering. Sometimes I think Greta will wish we'd called her Clara when she grows up..

maryqueenofyachts · 01/07/2010 16:47

Clara and Greta are both gorgeous and will not age.

Lola is very faddy and little-girly. Rosie is a nice nickname but very little-girly if she doesn't have a full name for it, doesn't have to be anything fussy, just Rose is nice and classic.

mathanxiety · 01/07/2010 16:54

Greta, a classic (and not necessarily German I think Garbo and Scandinavia) or Clara (which I would consider far more Germanic actually) but what's wrong with Germanic names anyhow?

Lola and Rosie are nice, but 'of the moment'.

LuluF · 01/07/2010 16:59

Greta is my favourite. I love it.

HumphreyCobbler · 01/07/2010 17:01

I have a Clara.

It is in the top ten in France and the top fifty in the US, I only looked at the british lists to see how popular it is.

russiandolly · 01/07/2010 17:06

Thank you all so much for your responses - Clara (closely followed by Greta) seems very popular on here and it is my favourite too! I feel very happy that we have chosen well!

I just need to sort a boys name now, we're having doubts...look out for my next post!

I love the name Clara - really pretty.

Jojay · 30/07/2010 18:19

Love Clara and Greta.

I had a horse once called Allegreta, known as Greta, and I always thought it was a beautiful name.

And she was a very nice horse!

freerangeeggs · 30/07/2010 19:11

Clara and Greta are beautiful. Greta's a bit more unexpected, which is a plus.

Lola has a pretty sound but I do think it'll date quickly. I also recently saw a classified ad for 'sexy Lola, 24 years old and VERY pretty, gives massages at home, discretion assured.' It does, unfortunately, have that sort of vibe! Don't get me wrong, I like the name, but it's a shame it has those sort of connotations.

Rosie is cute but babyish. I prefer it as a nickname for Rose, which is gorgeous.

Clara Jean and Greta Jean are beautiful names.

Beattiebow · 30/07/2010 19:15

I love Clara.

I reallly wanted to call dd2 Lola (7 years ago). Glad i didn't now. (not least because her older brother is called Charlie).

LexieKJ · 30/07/2010 21:10

Clara, Greta, Lola or Rosie?

I quite like all the names tbh. Lola has become quite trendy in recent years, which is the main reason I bumped it off my own baby names list, but it is still pretty. Clara is lovely (probably my favourite) but I much prefer it pronounced "Claira" (as in Claire with an 'er' on the end) rather than "Clarr-a". Greta is a name I used to intensely dislike but now I think it's quite charming and you certainly don't hear of many of them. I've known one (used to babysit her, she is now 18) and she likes her name! Rosie is sweet but doesn't really stand out (which might be a selling point to some people!).

Helokitty · 30/07/2010 21:32

Definitely Clara - the nicest name by far .

Clara - Classic, Pretty, will not date - all the things you want in a name.

Greta - Okay. Don't think of it as a pretty name tho.

Lola- Sorry, but it makes me think Tart. I know other people have those connotations too. So are you happy that some people might think 'Tart' when they hear your daughter's name. (It is certainly what I think when I hear people say the name, and going by this website / thread - other people do too!.

Rosie - Okay on a child, but too twee / naff for a grown up. Needs to be a nickname.

Linnet · 30/07/2010 22:49

Clara

eekymouse · 30/07/2010 22:54

I've never really thought about Greta before but actually think it ROCKS!

LJS666 · 30/07/2010 23:19

I like Greta but think it would be hard to live with - Clara Jean is best.

russiandolly · 04/08/2010 10:00

Hello!

Just to let everyone who was kind enough to offer their opinions and thoughts...Clara Jean arrived last Wednesday!

She is gorgeous and we are thrilled!

Rosie or Lola (though Lola is a bit of an odd one out)

zenoushka · 04/08/2010 12:19

Ahhh very happy for you and may I see definitely the best name was chosen - Clara is a beautiful name!

emptyshell · 04/08/2010 12:27

Lola's very very popular at the moment (having said that, I haven't met one who hasn't been adorable) - I think it will date.

Rosie - I'm never sure on these -y/-ie ones without an "adult" get-out clause, because not all grown women will be able to carry off a Rosie - I like Rosemary, or Rose, with Rosie as a nickname - but that's just me I guess.

Clara I really like, Greta's a bit Chalet Schooly for me. You kind of imagine her halfway up a mountain singing Eeidelweiss and I know I've spelt that wrong.

girlsyearapart · 04/08/2010 12:32

Congratulations! I clicked on your thread as my dds 1 and 2 are Lola and Rosie.

They don't know anybody with same name and I have only overheard Lola being called out once.

Love Clara though.

SirBoobAlot · 04/08/2010 12:37

Congratulations, beautiful name! Hope you're recovering well. x

Oldjolyon · 04/08/2010 20:14
