Marianne or Erica

Dear all

I have been on this site far too much recently. Not good as I should be working.

Further to an earlier post, I have narrowed the choices to two names:

Marianne
or
Erica

We would shorten Marianne to Mari, but Erica will not be shortened.

We have a surname beginning with a G and two syllables, that contains an s.

Which name do you think will age better? Which do you prefer?

If you strongly dislike either please let me know, and your reasons why. This may influence our choice, and I?d prefer to hear the worse now.

We?re tempted to leave making the decision till we meet our daughter? We can then decide whether she?s a Mari or an Erica.

Thank you all in anticipation.

Kate

P.S. we are playing it safe with boys names with either William or Matthew, as we both love these names. I?m letting my hubbie have the final say on which name for a son when the baby is born. On the family tree my hubbies Grandfather, Great GF, Great Great GF, and Great Great Great GF and Great x 4 GF were all William. Its only the last two generations that do not have a William

Marianne is gorgeous and classy - Sense and Sensibility, etc. Not too many of them around as well.

Erica is a bit plain and just about OK.

marianne is beautiful. erica wouldn't be a favourite of mine.

KittyBigglesworth · 30/06/2010 00:55

Marianne.

Erica reminds me of scraped back hair and large hoop earrings or bouncy tits streaking across a playing field. Can't believe that Erica Roe is still so strong an association in many posters' memories!

I am a Marianne so I am biased! Why shorten it though? My name was never shortened (apart from when I lived in England and became Maz for the duration!).

Kathleen123 · 30/06/2010 12:37

Mari is a welsh name (my hubbies Welsh and we live in Wales), and the shortened version helped me persuade him to liking the name.

My hubbie and I both have shortened names, and like short names for friends and family, with the option of a longer name to use at work etc.

Also it gives our child options, should she ever want to go by Marianne or Mari, Marie, Ann, Annie etc.

Thanks for your help.

Marianne definitely for me. Is on my short-list if we have another DD, and agree with the Austin connotations.

I don't like Erica - although I don't have a problem with feminised male names per se, Eric is not exactly a great male name to begin with...

russiandolly · 30/06/2010 21:04

I really love the name Marianne and hoped my other half would too but alas!

BrigitteBardot · 30/06/2010 21:20

Marianne is beautiful.

Marianne and Matthew........perfect!!
oooohh wish i could choose my babies names over and over.

proudfoot · 01/07/2010 02:45

Marianne is very pretty. Erica is dull and dated!

nooka · 01/07/2010 05:36

Marianne is lovely, especially with a Welsh accent I knew an Erikah lovely kid, but it's not a name I'm that keen on. However you might find when your baby is born it suits her to a tee.

flopsy1974 · 01/07/2010 10:21

I love Marianne, a gorgeous underused name. Have decided to go with Martha for current pink bump, but this came a very close second.
Now a relative who is due a month after me is thinking of using it. So may be out for any future additions.
Not keen on Erica.

Pasiphae · 01/07/2010 11:38

Marianne is beautiful. Erica feels harsher in comparaison.

Kathleen123 · 01/07/2010 12:03

Thanks all.

I'm getting more in love with the names Matthew and Marianne.

DH is not opposed to the names, but not as crazy about them as me. He's still harbouring on about the name Callum (no offence to anyone but I dont like this name).

I'm trying to influence him by suggesting names I know he'll hate (Orlando Barnabas Octavia and Arabella), in the hope that Matthew (or William) and Marianne will seem the best choice.

If that fails, I'll remind him that I'm the one carrying the baby for nine months and giving birth.

I do feel guilty sometimes at drying to manipulate DH.

xx

My DD1 is Marianne :D

People always say what a pretty name she has, and often talk about the Leonard Cohen song or the French Revolution, both of which are fine by me!
