Just Max or something longer?

Hello all,

After finding out I am now having a boy we are starting to become more certain we want to name him Max.

However, can you just have Max on the birth certificate or should you have something longer. The longer choices I would consider would be Maxim (which is a traditional Serbian name, although traditionally spelt Maksim), Maxwell, Maximum or Maximilian.

I think he would just generally get called Max but wonder whether it is more appropriate to have a longer more formal name on the birth certificate.

Thoughts, suggestions??

I secretly love Maximilian and Maximus but not sure I would have the balls (so to speak) to name him that. I think it would raise a few eyebrows and I am pretty conservative when it comes to names!

Thanks!!

I'd go for Maximillian. Second choice would be Maxwell.

Just to clarify - stupid question - but what is the correct spelling of Maximillian? I have seen it spelt Maximillion, Maximilian...obviously you want to get it right!

Max on its own would be just fine if that's what you like, I know a few of different ages.

My little boy is Max. With both I just named them what I intended to call them. I know a lot of people who have different or longer names on their birth cert and all hate it. (the inconvenience more so that the name) Although my little man sometimes introduces himself as Maximus (Decimus Meridius!!) when he is being playful!

Macsen

emmyloo2 · 28/06/2010 14:42

Thanks MammyG. I only intend to call him Max with Maximus being a fun nickname or Maximilian also just being a fun name. I don't think I would ever introduce them as "Maximilian" or "Maximus".

I think Maxim would be the exception. I might sometimes introduce him as Maxim if I went with the longer version.....

I love the name Max by the way - great choice!

I love Maxim. Reminds me of 'Rebecca'

My little boy is Max and that is what I put on the birth certificate as I did not intend to ever call him a longer version. I do like Maxim though

DastardlyandSmugly · 28/06/2010 16:31

Greensleeves snap - I was about to say the same thing.

George2010 · 28/06/2010 18:22

I think you should use Maximilian or Maximus on the BC if you love it! I know two little Maxs and they are both Maximilian on paper....but I think Max on its own is perfectly fine if not!

Lonnie · 28/06/2010 21:38

Depends on your surname say it out loud

if it is say Max Smith does he sound like the photographer that does page 2 in the Sun? Or does it sound like he could be anything he wants?

it was our no 1 boys name for dd1 but we intended to go with Maxim as we didnt want Max with our surname (doesnt fit well)

emmyloo2 · 28/06/2010 22:02

Lonnie - I think either Maxim or just Max would suit the surnane. Neither are great just because the surname has a lot of 's' in it so it's a bit of mouthful but I don't care!

But yep could be Max [surname] and he could be a lawyer, doctor or carpenter!

Any more thoughts? [shameless bump!]

my ds2 was a max for a day when he was born, it was short for maximillian(sp) but it didnt suit him and he became an oscar!

anyhow i am preg with baby no 5 and max is again on our name list, but i would probably but maximux or maximillian on the birth certificate.

my eldest is theo, but theodore on his birth certificate, v rarely gets called theodore, but its nice that he has a choice

emmyloo2 · 29/06/2010 17:18

Thanks 4madboys. Oscar was on our list as well. Theodore is also a great name. I love your boys names!! They are all fab.

Alternatively my oh has always been called Max for short but his name is Malachai.

PixieCake · 30/06/2010 17:14

Personally I would put the longer version on the BC just to give him more options as he gets older. Never has to be used if everyone is happy with Max.

MadameCastafiore · 30/06/2010 17:20

We have a Maximilian - his middle name is Elliott and we thought two l's would be too many in his two names so just went for one in his first name - hope that makes sense - no one except a really uncool uncle ever made a acomment about his name and I couldn;t give a toss really I think it is a cool name and Max on it's own is strong and direct.
