Was interested in some opinions on Nola.
I think it is sweet and old fashioned and wondered what you thought!

I think I like it

loobylu3 · 28/06/2010 11:43

Thx Hedwig! You are the only one so far!

It's OK but reminds me of the Nolan sisters.

How about Nina or Nadia?

gorionine · 28/06/2010 11:45

I had never heard it before but think it could grow on me.

loobylu3 · 28/06/2010 16:02

Thank you. Nina is nice too. I also know a Nova.

I like Nula/Nuala. Mmm, can't make my mind up about Nola.

sedgiebaby · 28/06/2010 16:16

I quite like it, my mum keeps trying to 'sell' the name Nona to me

gorionine · 28/06/2010 16:26

Nona? It means Grandma in Italian, Not sure it is suited for a little girl

Lastyearsmodel · 28/06/2010 16:36

I know a couple of Anonas - means ninth or pineapple, depending on which one you ask.

loobylu3 · 28/06/2010 18:22

I have a relative who used to be nick names Nona when she was little. (Her real name was totally unrelated).

I have never heard of that name before....but I think I really like it!

nelly83 · 28/06/2010 20:50

I used to go to school with a Nola. she looked liked a toy furby! She wasn't a very nice person so that would put me off using it. What about Nahlia or Norah?

wigglesrock · 28/06/2010 20:56

My friend has a 4 year old called Nola and its absolutely gorgeous when you hear someone say it out loud even when screaming gently counting to 10 in Tescos, I am pregnant now and am thinking of using it, go for it!!

themammy73 · 28/06/2010 22:13

I think it's lovely too and remember hearing it for the first time in a Woody Allen film where Scarlett Johannsen's character was called Nola. Thought it was fab! I would go for it if only my DH would let me!

loobylu3 · 29/06/2010 09:56

That's more positive than I was expecting actually, considering it is pretty unusual.

OP posts:
ludog · 29/06/2010 10:04

I like it

gorionine · 29/06/2010 10:25

Unusual can be pretty too I have a soft spot for short girls names.

TennisFan · 29/06/2010 10:29

I know a grown-up Nola - I like it

loobylu3 · 29/06/2010 12:56

gorionine- I agree- names not in common use can definitely be pretty too but I think people initially dislike/feel unsure if the name is less familiar. Once they have heard it a few times/ met someone with that name, they start to like it

mathanxiety · 29/06/2010 18:29

I love it. It's also shorthand for New Orleans, Louisiana (LA, hence NOLA) a beautiful and charming city once and hopefully again.

I think Nola has a lovely, cool, jazzy vibe.

loobylu3 · 30/06/2010 09:47

I didn't know that mathanxiety! I suppose it might be obvious to an American but probably not a problem in the UK.

coffeefestival · 30/06/2010 10:12

Louisiana would be a cool name!

allbie · 30/06/2010 12:12

My auntie is called Nola! My grandad named her. They live in West Yorks and back then it was really unheard of. I don't know where my grandad heard it. He's in his eighties now, how totally cool is he!

loobylu3 · 30/06/2010 20:39

albie- that's interesting! Your GFather must have been v ahead of his time!

I thought you might find this interesting.

Nola seems to have been most popular in the 1900s (American data)

I know a Nola with Nolly as a nn. I think it's lovely, and unusual.
