Our little girl is due at the end of july and we are in a big dilema regarding her name.
My husband is british and i am french,we do live in england...
Amelia is pronounced "A-mey-lia"in french and "A-mee-lia" in english...we just don't know which pronounciation to choose...:/
We also like "Maelia"....any opinions please...many thanks

What about Amelie? Ive heard it pronounced the same in the UK as in France. Thats not answering your question though is it?

I think that living over here you would be more likely to spend your time correcting people if you give her the French pronouciation.

But its up to you! Both are lovely

I love Amelie! There seems to be a boom in Amelia's where I live and it has put me off a bit though.

How would you pronounce Maelia? Visually I think it looks pretty.

moonstorm · 26/06/2010 19:40

Does it matter as such? Dh is Norwegian, and we pronounce ds's name differently according to which language is being spoken. Ds knows one way is English and one is Norwegian. Just a thought.

Maelia looks pretty but within a nanosecond of reading it I am thinking 'typo'

I think you should call her Dilaemia

diplodoris · 26/06/2010 21:03

You live in England so I'd choose the English pronounciation. Amelia is a lovely name but I don't like Maelia.

LynetteScavo · 26/06/2010 21:07

Be warned...Amelia is popular!

I knew a boy called Benjamin, whose English dad called him Benjamin as it's said in English, and his French mum called him Benjanmin as it;s said in French. They switched according to what ever language they were speaking.

I love Amelia or Amelie, personally if I had a French OH it would be Joelle or Celine.

Not sure about Maelia.

I love Amelia more so than Amelie, although that is also nice.

Isn't Maelia one of the Obama girls. I think it sounds a little made up.

Amelia is a gorgeous gorgeous name. A great little strong name for a girl and then will carry her through to adulthood.

flopsy1974 · 29/06/2010 09:44

Amelia is lovely. so is Amelie.
Both getting very popular though.

George2010 · 29/06/2010 10:07

If you use the french way you will be correcting people ALL the time....

I agree with Moonstorm- you could use the english version here but the french version there...lots of the mums at our school who are from other parts of europe have two ways of saying and spelling names and it's perfectly excepted...love the name by the way, yes it's popular but any nice name is!

George2010 · 29/06/2010 10:08

p.s Not sure about Maelia though sorry!

Beloune · 01/07/2010 17:22

Don't like Maelyss I'm afraid. How about Melissa? Easy for both languages.
