I've never heard of it before either. On first hearing I'm not too keen I'm afraid.

mathanxiety · 23/06/2010 22:51

A gorgeous name -- please tell your DH he has great taste!

MrsRhettButler · 23/06/2010 22:53

i do like it buuuuut it has the word 'silly' in it

but i really do think its gorgeous too

Marrow · 23/06/2010 22:55

I thought of marsala when I read it - sorry!

mathanxiety · 23/06/2010 22:57

I would pronounce it MAR-suh-lee

diplodoris · 23/06/2010 23:21

I wondered if it was something to do with Marseilles. I think people will often be asking how it is pronounced.

Albertine · 24/06/2010 06:59

I love it and would use it in a second if my partner would agree. But I think you have to be in Scotland for it to work (are you?) since no-one else has ever heard of it. It's not common nowadays. I only know one, a good teuchter from the Black Isle.

flopsy1974 · 24/06/2010 11:40

I like it. Would be very unusual in England.

iloveasylumseekers · 24/06/2010 11:48

I love it and went to school with a Marsaili. She was a Gaelic speaker. She pronounced it to rhyme with Parsley so there's no "silly" in it.

iloveasylumseekers · 24/06/2010 11:49

It is v uncommon even in Scotland (unless you're in a Gaelic area) - I am Scottish and had never heard of it until I met my schoolfriend. If you google it, you find her and about 4 other people!

tonkers · 24/06/2010 20:59

thank so much for all your replies - we are in london, albertine, but dh is scottish....
if i decide to head it off, i'll use the marsala excuse! - especially as dh won't let me have isadora because he thinks if we go to italy and people say it with an italian accent, it will sound like "it's a door".....

I live in Scotland and I know at least 3 adults, plus 2 newborns called it and I pronounce it Mars-alee, with a slender L sound. Def no silly in it. It is a beautiful name and is a version of Marjory/Margaret, although I think that that is a modern affectation as it was a name in existence way before any Marjories hit the highlands. Sileas is another historic gaidhlig name. Pron Sheelis..

Marrow · 25/06/2010 20:10

I love Isadora
