abigail is the only girls name i half like..and am still not convinced as i'm not sure i like Abi which it'll inevitably be shortened to. can you shorten abigail to Bea?
just praying this one's a boy!

How about Beatrice, nickname Bea instead.

lostlilly · 23/06/2010 14:45

I dont like Abi either and I dont think you could use Bea as that is definately from Beatrice.

what about Annabelle or if you like Bea just call her Bea? or Beau

sethstarkaddersmum · 23/06/2010 14:46

I love Abigail.
Abby is a nicer spelling than Abi IMO.

driedapricots · 23/06/2010 14:53

i don't think Beatrice suits us as a family if that makes sense?!

If you add up all the spellings (Abbe,Abbey, Abby, Abbi, Abi,Abbie, Abie,Abbiegail, Abbigael,Abbigail, Abbigale,Abigael, Abigail, Abigale have all been used this this) it's one of the most popular names at the moment so it will probably look quite dated in 20 years.

Abigail is a lovely name I agree that Abi is the most likely nickname.

AbFabT · 23/06/2010 21:22

I am an Abigail, to most people I am Abi/Abs and variations of those (AbFab, Abster, AbbaBaJabba!!!), but my husband does sometimes call me 'B' - I love it, but don't wish for other people to call me by it as I like it just from DH. I am sure if you introduced your daughter as Bea, that's what she'd get called.

flopsy1974 · 24/06/2010 12:01

Abigail is a lovely name. Definately like Abby as a shortened version.

McSteamy · 24/06/2010 12:04

I have an Abigail, we call her Abbie, Abster, Shabby Abbie but mostly Abbie! But if you want her to be known as Bea I can't see why she shouldn't be.

Abigail's quite a classic name. The abi part means father and the gail part means joy, lively or gift. Good connotations. In the bible she left an arrogant first husband for David and was noted for her wisdom and lack of pretention.

When I read the name, I thought of the brave Abigail Witchalls, the Little Miss Sunshine actress, Abigail Masham.

Have read that the closest to the original in the bible was Abigayil. Other spellings include Abigale, Avigayil, Abigal, Abigayle, Abigael etc.
You probably already know all this though.

I prefer Abigail or Gail to Abi.
