Is Asa too feminine?

I was just wondering whether it seems girly, given the ever popular Ava and Eva type names that are quite common nowadays. WDYT?

Asa Hartford? Football player? No it is not too feminine.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/06/2010 15:54

The only Asa I know is a boy. Actually he is 20. I like it and don't think of it for a girl at all!!

izzybiz · 18/06/2010 15:54

I only know one Asa and he's a fella!

nagoo · 18/06/2010 15:54

I did think it was a girls name. Aesen would be a bit more boyish? (although I think that is technically pronounced Orson, but who will know?)

curlywurlycremeegg · 18/06/2010 15:56

I like it and had it on my boys list for DD, but everyone else didn't. I now know someone who has a baby boy called Asa.

I used to see this climber guy who was called Asa. He was anything but fem. Gawd, he was fine.

He had Austrian parents and was tall and had loads of thick blonde hair that he wore in a ponytail (it looked HOT on him, he was built like a rugby player) with big blue eyes and a permanent tan because in addition to climbing he worked as a land surveryor and spent most of his time outdoors.

One very famous Asa would be Asa Yoelson aka Al Jolson...definitely a boys name

SoupDragon · 18/06/2010 16:04

If I saw it written down, yes I'd think it was a girl.

SoupDragon · 18/06/2010 16:05

I prefer Asher

ExitPursuedByABear · 18/06/2010 16:05

ooh expat - stop it.

Hedwig3 · 18/06/2010 16:18

I've only heard of it before now as a girls' name.

hhg · 18/06/2010 17:43

My female flatmate was Asa (Pronounced Oowsa). Her mum is from Norway.

NiceCuppaT · 18/06/2010 18:04

Asa defo a boys name, and I really like it.

sedgiebaby · 18/06/2010 18:33

Sorry it sounds feminine to me but then I've not known anyone with the name (girl or boy)

mopsyflopsy · 18/06/2010 18:47

It is a very common Swedish Girls name. To me, most names ending in -a sound feminine.

annasophia · 18/06/2010 18:52

I think Asa is the Norse Goddess of love.

So, yes, very feminine imo. But perhaps I'm influenced because I have a Norwegian girl friend called Asa.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 18/06/2010 20:28

I love it for a boy

I often suggest it on here

thisisyesterday · 18/06/2010 20:32

I think it's a lovely name for a little boy. but then I am biased as I have one!

mathanxiety · 18/06/2010 21:37

I think of it as a rugged, un-feminine Victorian sort of name. I like it.

LC200 · 19/06/2010 21:52

I really love it, wanted it for ds, but we already have an Ava so went for Asher instead.

Kathleen123 · 25/06/2010 15:15

I really like this name and prefer it as a boys name, the only Asa I have ever met is a grandad and a romany gypsy. So I dont think its a new name.
