Please give me your opinions on Edwin....
Do you think it is

  • quite normal now that you come to hear it and therefore you like it
  • totally old fashioned and not suitable for a baby

I have an elective on Thur, don't know the sex, and whilst I'm 100% on our girls name, I am totally not sure on our boys choice.

Full name would be Edwin Albert Thain surname.
Thain being my late grandmother maiden name, I actually would love it as a 1st name, but I'm not that bold!.
Albert was DH late father's middle name, and whilst I like it, he hated it so the reference to Grandpa is more that he hated his name. Though perhaps he'll be up there laughing !
Both died last year, so if its a boy, the middle names are definite, but its the Edwin bit I am worried about.
Honesty appreciated, even though I have posted about Edwin before....

I really like it It's a nice change from Edward, which I also like. Full name sounds great too.

NiceCuppaT · 15/06/2010 18:35

goodness NiceCuppaT our surname does begin with S. Are you thinking he might be fat and have EATS as initials?
I thought EATS was not too problematic...

I think it's lovely..go for it!!

LittleMissSnowShine · 15/06/2010 18:47

EATS would be a problem if he was a fat kid at primary school!! But hopefully he won't be fat?

I like Edwin, makes me think of Edwyn Collins - I love a bit of Orange Juice. Or the poet Edwin Morgan.

Come to think of it, they're both Scottish - is Edwin a popular name in Scotland? I have no idea! But I don't necessarily think it has to be old fashioned, it has a cool musical/poet/boho vibe as well

Good luck with the elective!

sedgiebaby · 15/06/2010 18:57

Dont mind old fashioned, Edwin doesn't sound strong/masculine to me

MummyLovesSadie · 15/06/2010 19:16

Edwin was my Grandpa's name so I love it! He was always known as Ted.

beccas · 15/06/2010 19:23

Phew, I do feel glad that the majority like it, even love it. Funnily enough tho, the two less positive replies are along the line or why I'm worried!
I shall calm down and wait and see what arrives.
Thanks all

I love it :-)

We were going to name DD2 it, if she was a boy - but as you can probably guess, I didn't get the opportunity.

I think it makes a refreshing change to Edward imo.

Fel1x · 15/06/2010 19:41

Lovely name

NiceCuppaT · 15/06/2010 20:32

I just wouldn't choose any combination of initials that spelt a word!
Names are fine in themselves though.

eatyourveg · 15/06/2010 20:47

Edwin is a good name. If you are really anxious about it though how about Edmund? Albert goes really well with either

coffeefestival · 15/06/2010 20:51

How about swapping the two middle names around so the initials would be ETAS?

CakeandRoses · 15/06/2010 21:51

Good name and makes a nice change from Edward. Ed is a lovely nn too.

You'll get a few negative comments on pretty much any name so please don't let that put you off if you love it.

Just tested EATS out on my mickey-taking DH.... he thought it was ok.

MarineIguana · 15/06/2010 21:55

Edwin = lovely, he can be Ed or Win, both are cool. But Thain is even better! What a fab name.

moondog · 15/06/2010 21:56

I've alwyas liked Edwing.
Knew a lovely lovely one once-thaink that swayed me.

halfawake · 15/06/2010 22:11

I do prefer Edward but there's nothing wrong with Edwin especially since the older names are "in" again. I think the middle names all go really well together and wouldn't be too worried about the initials.

Oh and I would love Ted or Teddy as a nickname

ZZZenAgain · 15/06/2010 22:16

it's ok
Find Thain ok as a first name too

SirBoobAlot · 15/06/2010 22:22

I really like it

LynetteScavo · 15/06/2010 22:25

I like Edwin, but you need to be prepared for him to be called Ed once he's a teenager.(Which isn't a bad thing, IMO)

mathanxiety · 16/06/2010 04:24

Like it a lot. Good luck !

chimchar · 16/06/2010 06:38

i know an edwin in his twenties...he is generally known as ed. he's very cool, funny and well liked, so in the words of simon cowell, its a yes from me!

BingumyAndThob · 16/06/2010 06:42

I'm sorry, I don't like Edwin. Prefer Edmund from 'ed' names.
