What would you think of a bloke called Matthieu?

TTC, if it's a boy I love the name Matthieu.

DP is French, we live in France. However we've always said we'll choose a name that works in the UK and in France, without spelling difficulties (i.e. no accents).

Might move back to the UK one day and I'm wondering how you'd react to a little boy/ teenager / man called Matthieu?

it is a perfectly good name but it looks French and nobody will know how to spell it here.

GetOrfMoiLand · 14/06/2010 14:35

I think it is fine - he is half French, so totally appropriate to have a French name. Works perfectly well in the UK I would say.

Think though if you had zero French connections it would be rather poncé.

MakemineaGandT · 14/06/2010 14:36

I would think he was French.

Lancelottie · 14/06/2010 14:36

He'd probably just be called Matt when back in UK. Would that annoy you?

annasophia · 14/06/2010 14:36

Agree that it is a very French name and most English won't have a clue as to how to pronounce or spell it.

How about Quentin or Vincent?

herjazz · 14/06/2010 14:39

would initially think it a bit of a wanky spelling of matthew tbh. But then if that's how its spelt in france, and you'd just come back from there, I wouldn't really think anything of it really. Obv it makes more sense to go with the spelling for where you are

Pasiphae · 14/06/2010 14:40

I would have though: oooh so are you French then?
Wouldn't think that it would be a problem at all.
People might be unsure on how to prononce it at first, but that's not so bad...

mollymawk · 14/06/2010 14:42

I'd just assume he had some French ancestry. Which would be correct!

castille · 14/06/2010 14:53

Nothing wrong with it, if French parent. A good choice, even - it's not difficult for an anglophone to pronounce once they've been told.

clarabellarocks · 14/06/2010 14:53

I would think he or one of his parents was french. Sod other people when it comes to spelling it. My brother is called Matthew and people still spell his name wrong (mathew) so I wouldn't give that a thought. Lovely name and very appropriate you have a french spelling.

If you live in France it's imp to have a name that works there.

NanKid · 14/06/2010 14:53

I would think he was French
