'plain' names?

tummytickler · 09/06/2010 19:52

I am finding myself drawn towards plain names again.
I am currently considering

Mary
Jean
Anne

What do you think - do you know many under 5, aer they going to get very popular?

What other plain names could I like?

I feel under pressure to come up with something a bit different, but I am liking these instead!
We like Joan, but it is too close to dh's name

Helen- it was popular for ages and has gone out of favour. Time to bring it back. It means Shining One.

I really like the name 'Mary'. Seems to suit all ages too IYSWIM.

LittleSilver · 10/06/2010 19:51

Joan? Really?

IngridFletcher · 10/06/2010 19:54

There was a girl at my sixth form college called jean. I thought it was bloody awful at the time but can see the appeal now. I prefer Gene for a boy though.

sleepyhead3 · 10/06/2010 20:13

I love Maude, Mary, Jane and Kate.
Would you consider Mary-Jane?
I normally hate hyphenated names but those two names are so classic that I quite like it!

Caro1302 · 10/06/2010 21:17

I love:

Joan (not keen on Jean)
Susan
Claire (so pretty)
Mary (one of DD's middle names)

muggglewump · 10/06/2010 21:26

DD has a very plain name, but an Irish one which makes it a bit unusual here in Scotland.

I adore Maude though, so go for that. I want a new pet just so I can use it!

mathanxiety · 10/06/2010 23:34

Bridget
Margaret
Julia
Agnes
Hope
Judith

stressheaderic · 11/06/2010 00:02

Joni is good, as an alternative to Joan or Jean.

"Hence the Chardonnay-Maes of today will be the choice of the elite tomorrow."

really?

Yes, I really think so. Mind you by tomorrow I mean in about 100 years plus time. Names go in cycles.

LaRagazzaInglese · 11/06/2010 11:18

Maeve
Judy
Daphne
Dora

sleepyhead - funny you should mention Mary-Jane - I was thinking about it yesterday when I was out walking. It doesnt seem awful like hyphenated names do to me - it seems like a real name - this led me to thinking if Mary-Jean was OK or a bit silly!

Muggglewump - dd has a good friend called Maud so cant do it unfortunately - which is a shame as i love it.

LRI - Love Daphne but I am convinced it will become really popular (and Penelope) but I am not sure why!

MrsWoolf - I love Hilda, but wonder if it might be very dated in a few years, even though it is not very popular it fits with the more popular 'now' names (such as Agnes and Dora).

I am trying to go a bit more classic - I fear my dd's names are a little on the 'now' side (which I had wanted to avoid) so I might try more classic - if I can!

tummytickler- I prefer Mary-Jane.
Mary-Jean sounds a bit Southern American to me- reminds me of Billy-Jean.
Mary-Jane sounds more classic and timeless. Just Mary or Jane would be lovely too!

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 12:24

Rose
Sarah
Janet
May
Eve / Eva
Hope
Fay

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 12:24

Lucy as well.

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 12:28

Or Marion?

diddl · 12/06/2010 17:55

Mary, Jean-old lady.

Anne sounds to me as if someone couldn´t be bothered to put any effort into thinking of a name.

reallacecurtains · 22/07/2012 04:33

I love Susan with nickname Sukey.
I have a Daphne, but not so plain? We love it - maybe it will become popular, but I think as long as you're ahead of the trend, it's not so bad!
I also wanted Maude (after my eponymous great - great- great aunt!!) as a middle name for Daphne but dh didn't like it (it was his 'turn' as dd2) so we settled for something in the top 100 names in the end which I don't love quite so much on its own. However, the names flow together well and, after all, it's only a middle name and does rein in the the 'old lady' feel somewhat.
We also considered Rachel as a mn, another old family name - that's quite plain. Rachel Weiss is rather lovely!
Sybil (is that plain?)

My cousin has just had a baby Anna.

winkle2 · 22/07/2012 19:48

Gina is a nicer version of jean imo

Mrsloverlovershabba · 22/07/2012 21:48

I love Jean

misslongstocking · 22/07/2012 22:05

love the name Jean ,it's so unfussy and unpretentious but a little bit 'different' from what other parents seem to be choosing at the moment.
My daughters' middle names are Rose and May - half wish we'd chosen these as first names now !

RillaBlythe · 22/07/2012 22:30

What did you go for, OP? Is baby 2 now?!

sashh · 23/07/2012 05:23

Nice names. With the potential for stealth boasts when she is able to write her name before her classmates.

poppy283 · 24/07/2012 11:26

Not keen apart from Mary.

Plain girls names I like are:
Anna
Kate
Grace
Beth
