Is the name Izabella just getting too popular?

Hiya ladies,

I'm a first time mum 2 be and have made it to 25 weeks, which is fantastic as I have lost three little ones previously to miscarriage.

So as you can imagine I'm tremendously excited about this little girl and want to give her a name that is as precious and special as she is to me. (Yep, pregnancy hormones still making me extra gushy).

Anyway, my point is that I have been considering the name Izabella but feel it might be far too popular. I first liked the name from the Greys Anatomy character Izzy, and not from Twilight.

My second worry is that her name may just be far too long if I go with it...

Izabella Debbie Lorraine Owen-Tristram

It is seriously doing my head in! lol Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

I like the z

but tbh yes it is enormously popular. Is there something else you like? Congratulations btw on a long awaited gorgeous baby-to-be!

Remember that she will have to spell her name every time for the rest of her life. Isabella is the usual spelling.

Izaura

Unusual, nobody will know where it comes from (Portuguese). Shortens to Iza, has magic Z.

Like the name, not bothered about being thrillions of them but hate the "z" sorry, changing the spelling looks like a spelling mistake/parent's ignorance.

Both of my girls names are extremely popular (though not so much in my part of the country) but I take it it's because they are very beautiful names. If you like it go for it, I think its a gorgeous name for a very special little girl.

Do agree on the spelling though, the correct spelling of Isabella gets misspelt wrong a lot anyway.

5DollarShake · 07/06/2010 10:52

Agree with everyone else - Isabelle with an 's' is much nicer.

And if you do go with this name, please think about nicknames other than the (in my opinion) awful Izzy!!

I have one of the variations of this name, and think it is such a waste of a lovely name, only to get called the harsh, ugly Izzy! The full version of the name is beautiful, as are many of the other nns. Izzy is not.

lidofabiro · 07/06/2010 11:02

Isabella and related names are very popular at the moment but that's because a lot of people like them I like it best with the "s" spelling. Also I prefer full names to nicknames so I'd use Deborah instead of Debbie.

Isabella Deborah Lorraine Owen-Tristram

.... would be a lovely name

hollyoaks · 07/06/2010 11:13

sorry should have just said 'misspelt', not 'misspelt wrong'

dizzydixies · 07/06/2010 11:17

our Isabella is know as Ella and she is the only one we know (family name and we love it) we are in Scotland though

love the nn Isa as well but not keen on Issy or the 'z' sorry

@ 5DollarShake my dd is an isabel which i love but she has been known as izzy to everyone from day one, it's also easy for her to say. I love izzy, and i do NOT think it is awful, harsh or ugly!!!

As you say, it is a reasonably popular name, although I do not know any myself, and you could easily offend a fair few people with such a harsh comment.
I wouldnt dream of telling you your dc's name was ugly, even if it wasn't my cup of tea.

OP the full name is perhaps a little long but if you love it would it matter too much if it was only used for official things? Do you have a reason for wanting two middle names?
On the other hand if at 25weeks you're already feeling the name is a little long, will you feel even more that way when you've filled out a thousand forms using it??

I like the twist of the 'z'instead of 's', i wish i'd thought of 'Ysabel' when i decided on dd's name, it's a bit different. Another twist to make it more unique if you like it.

There is no need to misspell names to make them unique. The name sounds the same, all you are doing is causing your child a headache every time they have to spell their nname out to someone. Cre8iv spellings are nafferama.

Isabella is a lovely name, as are Isobel, Bella, Isa etc. Debbie and Lorraine - are they family names? Deborah nicer than Debbie IMO.

seeker · 07/06/2010 11:40

It's not a 'twist" it's a mistake!

lilmamma · 07/06/2010 11:45

alot of the old fashioned names are coming back,my neighbour was Isabell and she was 90.its a pretty name,my friends daughter, has just had a baby and called her that..

missseptember · 07/06/2010 11:47

I'm partly glad i didn't use it because of spelling issues, but anyone using a variation of isabel etc will get asked how they spell it. A lot of names have different spellings y or ie, c or k, l or ll, y or ey are just a few that come to mind.
The different spellings come from different countries, Isabel/le/la is not an english name to begin with

Lionstar · 07/06/2010 11:47

My great neice has just been called Izabella Dorothy

EricNorthmansmistress · 07/06/2010 11:48

Isadora! Great name.

lidofabiro · 07/06/2010 12:04

The initials are I D L O T which does look rather like idiot.

mum2b33 · 07/06/2010 22:09

Well, i didn't think I'd started such a controversial topic! Lol.
As for the spelling, I just prefer the z to the s. I like the nick name Izzy thats why I prefer the z. Also, she wil have the option when shes older to be called Belle or Bella if thats what she prefers.

As for the middle names, they are both family names, Debbie is after my sister, she isn't a Deborah. And Lorraine is my hubbys late mother. So I don't think either of us will budge on those.

Other names we had been toying with are
Stella
Claudia
Eden
Bonnie
Laylah
Sahara

But Izabella ia at the front for sure, i think DH has made his mind up already! lol

Once again thanks for all your feedback, its good food for thought.

I like Eden and Stella

catinthehat2 · 08/06/2010 08:41

Erm, I think lidofabiro has a very good point about IDIOT/IDLOT - can you swap the L & D bits around?

loobylu3 · 08/06/2010 09:55

I like Isabella but not Izabella. It just looks as if you are trying to be different. Isabella is a popular name at the moment but very pretty so I don't think you should be put off by popularity if you love it not alter the spelling to try to make it seem youneeke (translates as unique).

5DollarShake · 08/06/2010 10:37

misseptember - my name is Isobel!!! So if I'm offending anyone, I'm offending myself, first and foremost.

You've kind of missed my point - which is that the actual name (and all the variations) is just lovely - it's a beautiful name, but in my opinion, Izzy is a very un-pretty nickname. And I do feel I can say that, as I have been lumbered with it often enough myself!

All I was trying to do was encourage the OP to think of all the other lovely nns, as opposed to the default one. If she wants to go with it though, I'm hardly going to stop her!
