How do I convince DH to like the name Betty?

I just can't let go of this name! I really like it, but neither of us likes Elizabeth. He says it reminds him of a fat middle aged woman and keeps repeating 'Ugly Betty' and 'Sweaty Betty' . How can I convince him that it is a very cool and fab name?

We can't really agree on many others. So far we have on our list:

Mimi
Orla
Ava
Marcy (just saw this on another thread and we both like it)
Beatrice

But none of these say 'this is the one' to me. He also likes Daisy but I have firmly vetoed that. That is his sole contribution to the discussion though, Daisy. All the other names I have come up with.

I like Betty so much - help me convince him, or help me come up with something I like as much!

If he doesn't like it, you can't change his mind.

I know a Beatrice who has always been known as Betty. I think Betty is a lovely name and you could well start a new trend. What about Beatrix?

EricNorthmansmistress · 06/06/2010 22:12

I knew a Beattie, short for Beatrice. Could you call her beatrice and slip Beattie/Betty in as a nn later?

piscesmoon · 06/06/2010 22:19

No one could convince me that Betty was a nice name-however hard they tried!

fireupthequattro · 07/06/2010 01:12

Both my nans were Betty so if i had a girl i would definitely name her after them.

But I had the same feedback ugly Betty etc. As I'm welsh, as were both my nans I would use the name Beti or Betti.

I like everything on your list except Marcy (which to me sounds very like a librarian name from the 1950s -- hand knitted cardigan, tweed skirt and disapproving glare, mysterious knickers, tights wrinkled at the ankles, sensible shoes).

Bette is nice, and I see Betty in a more hip light than some here, but I also think I can see where your DH is coming from. However, I don't think he should be able to get away with just shooting down all your suggestions -- give him the job of coming up with 20 decent names and then start whittling them down. You'll need a middle name too.

I love Beata (Bay-ata), but it would be mispronounced all the time. DD1 has a friend named Betsy -- it suited her beautifully since I first knew her at age 5. She would be 20 now.

AVA Def!!

iwasyoungonce · 07/06/2010 06:44

I like Betty. In fact, I like all your listed names - including Daisy.

if you ae serious about wanting to convince DH, then my suggestion is to just keep referring to the baby as Betty all the time until he just gets used to it!

This worked for me! My DH now loves the name that I chose for our DS, although he was not initially keen.

LuluF · 07/06/2010 07:18

There's a little girl at my daughter's school called Betty - she's about 10. Never heard her referred to as 'Sweaty Betty' and she's far from Ugly - so no one would call her that.

I love the name, too and I'd love to use it. (Rather than Sweaty Betty - DH was more unkind/crude and said 'Betty Swollox').

If we did use it, I'd be inclined to used Elizabeth on BC - but put off by 'Liz' as a nn and fact that it's DH's sister's name and I don't want anyone to think it's a tribute in anyway.

How long do you have left? Could you just keep referring to her as Betty? He may gradually become accustomed to it?

Bumperlicious · 07/06/2010 18:27

I'm only 25 weeks so have a bit of time to brainwash convince him . I've already sold DD onto the idea so that's a start.

Appreciate all your comments though. Happy to hear more suggestions that you think I might like.

It's lovely! I wanted to call dd2 Betty but Dh wouldnt have it. I reckon you are bang on the zeitergeist but beware in case millions of little Bettys start popping up over the next few years.

LetThereBeRock · 07/06/2010 20:14

Sorry I'm with your dh on this. It isn't cool or fab. It's horrid.

I don't like Betsy either.

Your other options, other than Marcy, are much nicer, though I'm not sure about Mimi. It doesn't work for an adult imho.

DontCallMeBaby · 08/06/2010 19:56

Orla is nice. I like Iona too but could never use it as I had a boss called Iona and didn't much like her. Mimi needs a proper name behind it for later options - Miriam? I like Ada too (erm, is the name of my parents' boat, so that's rather weird).

I don't think Betty 'goes' with your DC1's name tbh ... you may thump me at your leisure.

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 08/06/2010 20:00

Erm...it is a really stupid name. Sorry.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/06/2010 20:04

DD is Elizabeth and I sometimes sings Betty Boo to her when changing her nappy, Havent decided on a nickname yet but leaning towards bumble bee.

PotPourri · 08/06/2010 20:05

Bumperlicious · 08/06/2010 21:02
