Is Lucas destined to be ultra popular?

Do you like it?

I think that Lucas will date in the future, not that it's necessarily a problem - I don't see the Alisons and Lisas of my childhood being burdened by that. I have a Lukas and spelt it that way because it's the German translation of Luke and therefore a biblical name, so thought it wouldn't date in the same way. I didn't know, however, that Lucas is also in the bible, so stand corrected on that. Eitherway, I think it's a lovely name (obviously!), but to answer your original question, yes it has become fairly popular (rose to no. 15 on the Bounty list in 2009 I think)

It's my little boy's middle name and I adore it. My close friends little boy has a Lucas - he is gorgeous. The meaning is beautiful "Light" which is why we chose it for a middle name.

I wanted to call ds1 Lucas but dh didn't like it so he's Luke instead. Lovely name.

I love love love the name Lucas! have one myself - 3yo

so far I haven't come across any in our area, which is nice. although I'm sure a few will crop up at school when DS starts!

I would say it is picking up in popularity though.

I have a Luke, he is the only one is his class and there are no Lucas's or Luka's either. Surprising considering they are officially pretty popular!

henry37 · 05/06/2010 22:07

its become very popular.

Claire236 · 06/06/2010 12:47

I keep hearing it's very popular but I only know 2 Lukas (1 Italian), my Luke & no Lucas'.

This is what it says in 'A Concise Dictionary of First Names' Oxford University Press:

Lucas

In part a learned form of Luke, in part a transferred use of the surname derived from it in the Middle Ages.
The Latin form Lucas was often used in the Middle Ages in written documents in place of the spoken vernacular form Luke, hence the common surname. It is also the spelling preferred in the Authorized Version of the New Testament, which has had some influence on its selection as a given name.

If my next baby (I am 34 weeks) is a boy he will be called Luke - I also like Lucas though and DD1 (5) wants to call a boy Lucas, so he might end up being called both - as she is very stubborn and will probably just call him Lucas whatever his name!!
They are nice not so common/not so faddy names.

I know one Lucas. I like it and I like Luke.
