Hi,

I'm new to mumsnet and recently discovered I'm expecting my second child! Although early days I'm already musing names.

We aren't planning on finding out the gender so need one of each, I said to dh I fancied a girls name that was a but different but do like all the popular names around at the mo ie ava, Mia, ella etc .

He suggested Orla, I like it I think but would appreciate your thoughts!

Thanks

Can it be like Orflaith? My dd1 isn't here to spell for me. She is out with her boyfriend, Irish speaking household, he is called Jack

chipmonkey · 03/06/2010 22:59

can be like Orfhlaith, you were very nearly right stleger!

Can't beat consonants if you want to confuse ...

mrsbean78 · 03/06/2010 23:07

I am Irish, in the UK - don't think I'd go with it.

It's going to be Oh-la, not Orla.. unless you live in Devon or Lancashire!

chipmonkey · 03/06/2010 23:11

I have found people in the UK call me Orler.

mrsbean78 · 03/06/2010 23:15

Chipmonkey, you have a vowel at the beginning of your surname (or 'h'). The good old linking r, like lawr and order

katiepotatie · 03/06/2010 23:17

love it!, our ds would have been Orla had he been a girl

Love love love Orla, wanted it for dd2, but dh not keen, so we went with Sorcha.

FiveOrangePips · 03/06/2010 23:42

I really like it, we have a Dervla - dh is Irish - I would consider calling 2nd dd Orla (if I ever got round to having another child). I really struggle finding girls names I like that are celtic/Scottish/gaelic.

I would get a tiny bit annoyed by Olar/Orlar type pronunciations - it bugs me a bit with my dd - and even my ds struggles with her name - Dehvlar is one I hear a lot that really gets on my nerves.

I have a beautiful golden priness Orla (14m) as a DD, so love the name.
I was looking for something that's a real name, none of this made up rubbish, but was a little bit different to all the Graces and Evies (both very nice names, just loads of them in my area).
Everyone seems to like it, now I need ideas for DC2 due in 2 months.

DeFluffy · 04/06/2010 12:32

orla is nice. Lady who was a little 'free' with her affections on bb was called it though i think. Apart from that its a lovely name and would be unusual round here, midlands, so not overused.

pinkpolkadot · 04/06/2010 13:46

Thanks everyone, think it will be at the top of our list if we have a girl, don't know the girl on bb, maybe that's for the best!

Growing up in the 70s it was just Orla!

Now that people have given up on mass and need to get their children into non-denominational Irish schools it's Orfhlaith.

Cynical? moi?

I prefer Orla.

It does depend though. I like Niamh and don't think that that looks funny. But Orfhlaith makes me feel a bit nervous.

Orla on Big Brother was a cracker. She kept talking to her enhanced cleavage.

SillyTillyBilly · 04/06/2010 17:32

Lovely name

pointydog · 04/06/2010 17:35

I like it
