Sadhbh (ryhmes with five!) for girl

I really like Sadhbh for a girl, but i'm hesitant about it as it is difficult to get the spelling right, and i'm wondering if it would be really annoying to have a lifetime of "Sadhbh; S-A-D-H-B-H; rhymes with five...."

DH quiet likes it but is not overly keen due to difficulty pronouncing it if you are not familiar with it.

It is very popular in Irish folklore (i'm Irish, DH is Scottish). But there is a tendency to accidentally pronounce it SIEVE .

Shortlist alternatives include Aoife, Molly, Ellen and Lily.

Any thoughts? We have to finalise this shortlist very soon!

ooh I like that

ShowOfHands · 04/06/2010 17:26

I think most people pronounce it KEE-VA but also KWEE-VA is a variation. Friend is Kwee-va.

MagalyZz · 04/06/2010 17:27

I quite like it.

I prefer Siofra. Which might be easier in the UK

MagalyZz · 04/06/2010 17:28

Oh now this is where I realise I have no coherent policy!

I think Keeva looks totally weird. Don't do it. Caoimhe, it has to be. BUT yet, I don't like Orfhlaith, I prefer Orla

PuppyMonkey · 04/06/2010 17:29

Oh no, I wouldn't spell it Keevey or keeva or whataver, that was just to show someone how to pronounce it.

GladioliBuckets · 05/06/2010 11:23

Would be tempted to keep the unpronounceable ones for middle names. Then it's up to the child to decide if they can handle the hassle.

CallMeMissTweedy · 05/06/2010 16:16

I have a supposedly unpronounceable Irish name and live in London. Honestly, people survive without being called Anne, you know! Most people, once they have got the hang of my name, tell me how pretty it is.

If you love it, go for it. Gotta beat another bloody Isabella!

JuneMammy · 13/06/2010 16:06

Thanks a mil for all the helpful advice ladies! I think we are going to go with Molly or Aoife now. I guess i like these nearly as much as Sadhbh so it might be the best option.

So, we'll decide for sure when the little one appears (40+2 now!)

Thanks!

I absolutely love Sadhbh! Think its elegant & beautiful. I have a Tadhg and we do have problems with spelling all the time, but Im still glad we chose it and it really suits him, even if he does get called Tiger all the time!

justwantcheese · 09/04/2012 22:14

Sorry don't like it and it will be a pita for your daughter every single day.

threeleftfeet · 09/04/2012 22:21

Ooh I always wondered how you said Sadhbh.
She's Ossian's mother isn't she, turned into a deer for a while?

I like it :)

From your list I like Aoife best, lovely name.

MickyDodger · 10/04/2012 10:52

you realise said child is now almost 2? I imagine she has a name already.

nizlopi · 10/04/2012 11:04

Urg, no, please don't lumber your daughter with such a stupid name.

MickyDodger · 10/04/2012 11:05

She's two, and its not a stupid name, you're just ethno-centric and exceedingly parochial.

Stellan · 10/04/2012 11:46

I don't like it. It rhymes with five, hive, and jive. It sounds like a noun to me rather than a given name. English speakers (and speakers of similar languages) will struggle to pronounce it. Use it only if you're prepared to teach people how to say it every single time they see it.

MummysLittleSunbeams · 10/04/2012 12:35

As others have already said THIS IS AN OLD THREAD!! I'm sure the op chose a name for her baby oh..... 2 years ago! Grin

raniastar · 14/04/2012 03:10
