Nell??

Ellen, to be called Nell (assuming it's a girl).
What do we think? It's my grandma's name but she was called Nellie, which I hate... Any chance that child can get away without being 'shortened' (longened??) to Nellie?
Also consultants in RL seem to think it's a bit of a 'vanity plate' since I am called Eleanor, but surely that won't matter for most of her life??

I adore Nell. My great, great aunt was Nellie on her birth certificate.

Prefer Helen to Ellen though.

I think Nell is just lovely. Our DD-to-be will have a name which can be shortened to Nell - I suggested it to DH (whose grandmother was known as Nell, but with a different full name) and he was horrified by it. He thinks it is too old lady.

I think it is a simple, elegant and timeless nn.

I know people say you can't choose the nn - it is bestowed on the child by their friends - but I know plenty who've been given a nn by parents from birth and it has stuck.

Oh I love it! I would consider it if my brothers puppy wasn't called Nell/ie lol! If you do feel it is too close to your name (I should take no notice of what colleagues say, mine make outrageous comments about names I like - what you and dad thinks is the most important IMO)then there are a few variations that would still give you a nn of Nell

If you were called Helen then Ellen would sound v similar but Eleanor doesn't seem so very close to me, especially if you are calling her Nell

I had some italian friends called Sebastian and Rena and they called their baby girl Sabrina (Seb-Rena geddit) which I thought was a bit much but who cares really?

I expect she will get Nellie (a bit) but if she/family sticks to it then not so much. My name is double barrel, and because family have always called me me by both, so have I when introducing myself socially/professionally and that is how I'm known (by my very long full first name/s!).

I like Nell. I don't really like Ellen and, as someone suggested, Helen would be nicer.

Hedwig3 · 01/06/2010 20:10

Lovely.

MunchMummy · 01/06/2010 20:11

Nell, smell. Sorry, its quite a nice name, but rhymes with smelly.

loobylu3 · 01/06/2010 20:14

I love Nell!

randomimposter · 01/06/2010 21:03

really like Nell

was thinking of it as nn for Helena, or maybe Eleanor.

But see your problem in that it's your name too

sedgiebaby · 02/06/2010 08:16

OK did I just read this right, don't use Nell it rhymes with smell!!! This board does not cease to amaze me for the juvenile jibes it attracts from its members. I'm starting to think these are not mature 'mums' at all but their 8 year old children having fun with mums logon.

IMO if kids want to make fun of your child, they will, if their name doesn't conveniently rhyme with something insulting they will conjure up a nn regardless. Anyway my point is f you really want to know what children will do to your little ones name go to the playground and ask or....alternatively....the mumsnet name board *rolls eyes8

I love Nell and know a lovely one.

pulpfiction · 02/06/2010 09:31

Other children may sing Nellie the elephant to her.

sedgiebaby · 02/06/2010 10:50

Nellie the elephant? Personally I have not heard that for about 20 years. Nah I don't think so
