Isn't Jonah the 'bringer of bad luck'?

biddysmama · 27/05/2010 12:27

The boy's name Jonah \j(o)-

nah\ is pronounced JOE-nah. It is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "dove". Also means "peace" as the dove is a symbol of peace. Biblical: because Jonah was on board a ship when God caused it to sink, sailors have traditionally used the name to personify someone who brings bad luck. Medical pioneer Jonas Salk.

I think Jonah Paul is a lovely name. Go for it I say. I wanted it on my list but DH vetoed it. All this stuff about it representing bad luck is rubbish.

rachel234 · 27/05/2010 14:31

It is not rubbish. If you look up jonah in any dictionary, you will find its meaning:

Jonah [ˈdʒəʊnə], n

  1. (Christian Religious Writings / Bible)
a. a Hebrew prophet who, having been thrown overboard from a ship in which he was fleeing from God, was swallowed by a great fish and vomited onto dry land b. the book in which his adventures are recounted
  1. a person believed to bring bad luck to those around him; a jinx
swanandduck · 27/05/2010 14:46

I think it's too like John. Could you call him Paul Jonah?

swanandduck · 27/05/2010 14:47

Sorry, just read your post again and see John is DS's middle name .

biddysmama · 27/05/2010 14:57

But some names happen to be words with other meanings, e.g. will, rose, grant, and jonah happens to have another meaning too. Of course, this may not bother you .

LetThereBeRock · 27/05/2010 15:27

I love Jonah but I don't think 'Jonah Paul' flows very well.

The association with bad luck wouldn't bother me in the least.

diddl · 27/05/2010 15:31

I think it´s lovely & goes well with the other names.

mathanxiety · 27/05/2010 16:23

I think it's a really nice combination, and I love Jonah on its own -- ignore the bad luck thing.

What do people do if they own a black cat?

5DollarShake · 28/05/2010 05:48

With all due respect, the meaning is rubbish, unless you're completely superstitious. In all honesty, such meanings as these really do matter very little to some people. It's akin to believing that if a hare crosses your path while pregnant, your baby will have a harelip, or that if your child is born on a Wednesday, it will be full of woe. [wink}

I think Jonah Paul is fine.

sophiesmummie · 28/05/2010 10:01

Of course, the OP may not care about the name's meaning. That is fine.

But she IS asking for opinions on the name Jonah, and so is presumably interested to hear ALL opinions, including those who remind her what the word jonah means.

sorry for double post .

I like it, and I think it goes.
