Naff initials

HelenFF · 26/05/2010 23:45

Would it bother you if the names you chose for your little one meant they spelt something out?

For example, the names we are considering at the moment would give my baby (due in four weeks, eep), NAF.

I waver between thinking that you hardly ever write out names in initials anyway (wouldn't do so at school, etc) and that NAF isn't quite the same as naff, and thinking that if I can choose something else, maybe I should. But there aren't any other middle names I like at the moment. And at least it's not as bad as MAD or various other three/four letter words that could come up in initials.

It's silly to be thinking about this, isn't it?

Some initials are awful but NAF seems fine to me. I think it is most important to look at initial and last name together eg P. Rick.

jenroy29 · 26/05/2010 23:59

I don't think you are being silly, your child will have their name for a long time so you should put a bit of thought into it.
You can't however predict the future, some new company could hijack your childs initials or they could ruin them by getting married. Try googling NAF see what comes up!

sapell3 · 27/05/2010 00:05

How about ANF and still using the name beginning with N?

MrsRhettButler · 27/05/2010 00:06

my friends initials were BO until she got married!

she hated it btw

LackaDAISYcal · 27/05/2010 00:10

My DS1 would have been CJD if we hadn't stuck in an extra middle name! Family tradition dictated that we had to have the J though.

Definately worth thinking about!

HelenFF · 27/05/2010 00:16

Names are Nathan Alexander. Nathan is definite. I'm open to other names for a middle (esp. if it was a family name) but this is the only one husband likes.

I thiiiiink it's okay - I mean if the worst insult is 'your name's a bit naff' it can't be that bad, can it? /asks hopefully

Cheers for the replies, all useful

Use it, but add a one-syllable short name (John, James etc before your surname)

Not Fred, obv

hopingforanother · 27/05/2010 09:38

How about Nathan Oliver?

I wanted to use this but surname starts with a B! Looking for a different middle name, but I love Nathan it is such a nice name!

mamatomany · 27/05/2010 09:40

My husband is threatening our baby with the initals Ipod, it'll be Idad if I have my way which is slightly better but really who cares it doesn't get written down very often for anyone to notice.

KAEKAE · 27/05/2010 10:54

My DDs are P.E.A... So she's my sweet pea as I call her. I'm not sure on NAFF TBH, I think I would avoid it.

HelenFF · 27/05/2010 11:31

Remember it's NAF not NAFF at the moment! NAF doesn't actually mean anything.

LouMacca · 27/05/2010 11:53

My DD initials are S.A.M. so sometimes I use it as a nn although its nothing like her actual name.

Sweet P.E.A. - love it!

IlooklikeGrotbagstoday · 27/05/2010 11:57

Well, i was H.E.L.P until i got married and now i'm H.E.L.O. It never bothered me at all

imahappycamper · 28/05/2010 20:32

I taught a Zac whose initials were Z.A.C. He thought it was great.

Tortoise · 28/05/2010 20:39

My Zach would have the initial Z.A.C if he had my surname. He thinks it would be great. He does want to change his surname when he is 16. Don't think XP would agree to it so he has to wait until old enough to choose for himself.

I don't think NAF is bad.

Adair · 28/05/2010 20:45

My daughter is AFC. Dh (Arsenal fan) loves it . Was coincidence too - family names.

NAF is fine.

Eddas · 28/05/2010 20:46

naf doesn't mean naff to you but it will to children. I think I would avoid it tbh. our surname begins with O and I wanted to be very careful not to end up with a 'BO'. SIL/BIL clearly either weren't bothered or didn't think about it as DN is BO. Now i'm married i'm NO

Mr parents didn't think about initials when my sis was born and afterwards they realised they'd given her the same initials as my mum so they thought about initials with me and my lil bro.

I'm not sure NAF would be that noticeable these days TBH.

But our surname starts with T and DS's middle names are Reeve Henry - DH wanted them the other way round but no way was I giving him the initials HRT!!!

MumInBeds · 28/05/2010 21:17

We had to have a name shuffle to avoid 'CJD' (it was 1999 so it was big news at the time).

My parents took great care with names, they even checked my fist two initials with every other letter as a potential future surname. My grandfather however had initials he hated, he had no middle name and was simply VD - not good back in the day.

HelenFF · 28/05/2010 22:04

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I showed the thread to my husband who rather helpfully replied 'ha ha'. But seriously, it was good to get more opinions. I have a feeling we are going to stick with it, but at least now I know I've thought it out properly. Well, mostly...

ds'2s initials are G.E.M

i didn't even notice until his odd-father mentioned it at his naming day!

A1980 · 29/05/2010 22:25

My friends child's initials are A.S.S.

I kid you not! They actaully got him monogrammed towels with that on it too!

Another friend didn't choose the names she wanted of her son would have been E.G.G.

I would be careful with initials

TakeLovingChances · 30/05/2010 16:42

My initials are TLC (hence my username) but that was through marriage, prior to that they were TLH.

My DS has the initials ANC, both my dad and FIL snorted and said that that was the abreviation for African National Congress. So it is, but I don't think it means much and certainly didn't put DH and I off calling DS that.

LittleSilver · 30/05/2010 19:35

DD2 was nearly PIES. Until we thought about it!
